Rubber bung under auto gearbox

Post by marcia »

Can anyone tell me what the rubber bung is for under the automatic gearbox? pulled mine out today and it was oily, seemed like engine oil, washed it and put it back in, thought maybe for inspection purposes!!!

I'm getting a bit concerned about this rubber bung as it is dripping oil, appears to be engine oil and when I remove the rubber bung, which I have done twice now it is full of oil.
Engine oil level hasn't dropped any considerable amount that I am aware of but garage floor showing signs of oil leak. Any ideas guys would be apreciated as the Cavalier and me are off on holiday together on saturday.

If it's engine oil then the end of the sump gasket could be leaking or more likely the rear main oil seal. If it's transmission fluid then front seal on the box or the torque converter.

It's engine oil, so that means the auto box has to come out. Is this a garage job or can it be done at home? Thank you for any advice given.

Did you check the sump gasket as Paul suggested?

It's doable, but don't underestimate the weight of it, they are not really much different to a manual to remove, but they are twice the weight.

Ye, they are flipping chunky, you'd need an engine crane I reckon. The Haynes manual covers removing the auto gearbox, may be worth flicking through that, should just be nuts and bolts, but as I mentioned, remove the bonnet and get a crane if you're going to attempt to remove it. I'd imagine due to the size of it, you'd need to unbolt one of the subframe beams and drop it out from underneath. Dont't think you'd be able to get it out from above.

Car high as you can get it, engine supported, subframe off, gearbox out of the bottom, preferably on a jack. Personally I wouldn't do one at home on the floor, but I don't like doing anything on the floor these days tbh.
