Bizarre occurance

Post by carlos_canter »

been out most of the afternoon in the car, on way back it skipped a beat, like no petrol, then carried on as normal.

Then it happened again but this time didnt recover, foot to the floor and sounded like no fuel at all. Pulled over and she restarted in a few seconds and ran perfect but when it was dying, the rev counter was jumping all over the place.

Any one had this before?

Thought it may of been dreaded head gasket but it hasnt over heated and the coolant and oil are the right colour and level.

Have had problems recently with struggling to start but I have ran poor fuel 2 week ago and only forecourt petrol since.

Fuel pump relay?...
Had a similar running out of fuel style problem on my old cav..
Changed half the engine Componants before a smart add said it was the relay...

Swapped it out... Ran perfect!!!

I was thinking along the lines of the pump.

Plenty of juice in it.

Did have my front fog fall out and got dragged under the wheel, may have to check for any damage to the fuel lines.

Thanks guys

Ye, I'd probably side towards the pump itself or the relay.

Pump relay top of the list, was a common list of symptoms on the early ones... they even modified the relays because they were all doing it.

Great stuff, will see if I can get hold of one.

Sort of figures because it starts fine straight away, pumps are usually running or not running.

Many thanks guys

So far, ive been unable to find the relay.

Haynes says its in the relay box under the bonnet and ive heard that they are also in the drivers right hand kick panel.

Unable to locate the relay as most forums say that its purple or according to haynes it has a black base.

Really struggled tonight and cut out on way to work so had to bump start it(starter sometimes struggles when hot), not nice in rush hour traffic.

Checked under seat and found little 2 wire plug on top of tank, disconnect it and engine cuts out, disconnect plug underneath the car and it cuts out aswell. Pressed the fuel lines and can feel the fuel going through and it starts to struggle.

Can any one point me in the right direction? its a '95 2.0 16v ecotec, X20xev code(I think).

Cheers again chaps.

I didn't twig it's an xev, chances are it's the crank sensor giving up on that anyway. Those are the two usual locations for fuel relays. Later ones are purple four pin and if they are in the relay box then there are usually two, side by side, one for injectors and one for pump.

You didn't mention whether you had an engine light.

The crank angle sensor should throw up an engine light.
But if the ECU loses top dead centre it would cut the spark.

Fuel pump would not throw up an engine light.

It struggles to start and once running the light comes on a few seconds later.

Sorry, my fault, should of said really.

I think your both on the right track, some one else mentioned timing / crank sensor at work, and a fuel pump wont throw the light on.

She is long over due for a service and the poor fuel will of probably coked everything up a bit.

Will look into timing sensor.

Many thanks guys, I hate it when you cant see the wood for the trees.
