Am I thinking the right problem

Post by CAV-BAZZA »

Hello, as you guys may have read my other threads I recently renewed the grease in my selector switch, put was facing trouble selecting gears, to day I looked at the cable that is attached to the lever inside the car, and where it attaches to the selector switch the wire seems to be like a 'S' shape, this is about 5-6 inches of the wire where it comes from a rubber grommet on top of the gear box to the selector switch, if I leave it in park and select a gear on the lever inside the car it goes to that gear but when I try going back up the gears to park it just doesn't want to know so I have to manually move the lever on the selector switch to park or other gears, my question to you guys is does the cable from the rubber grommet on the gear box need to be dead straight or does it have the 'S' slight bend, also I have try to adjust the wire from inside where the lever is via 10mm nut and pulled the wire so it has some tension but it still the same, would this mean a new cable is needed or can I adjust anything else, also how hard is it to change the cable thanks

It sounds like you have bent the cable.
On my 2.O litre the it is straight where it goes onto the gearbox .

Hello the cable seems bent, I have taken it out from the car and straightened it but once back on the car the car moves in gears ie;reverse and the gears but once retiring up the gears to park, it doesn't want to know and the cable gets a lovely u bend in it which doesn't let the selector engage in the selected gear, would this be a case that I could of stretched the cable I know it's metal but because I was having a war with it trying to get it back on the selected lol I know I was bit fustrated and annoyed so was pulling and tugging, it's only when andrei told me they are bit fiddley to get back on I realised oh lol, all help appriciated as usual

Are you sure the switch isn't too stiff?

I think you have damaged the cable if the transmission is free
