V6 engine re build

Post by chrisash86 »

I’m thinking of getting V6 engine rebuilt has anyone had this done and know in terms of cost what I should be looking at and also where should I be looking to get it re built? I.e a Vauxhall specialist or a general engine specialist? And what are the main parts that hey replace?

I guess Humbucker is the chap to ask, but he is a very busy man, and does not visit the forum very often.

I suppose it is all down to what they find during strip down that dictates how much it would cost.

If it has a high mileage or it is visibly showing component wear or smoke on start up etc, it would be daft not to go the whole hog with new bearings, seals rings throughout.
Possibly even a new camshaft and so on.

Off the top of my head, I would envisage anything above £800 to a few grand dependent upon how much is replaced.
And how thorough / professional the garage team are.

A lower mileage engine showing minimal wear may be happy with a complete head strip and full gasket set. Plus piston rings for good measure.
Probably below £500 dependent upon what does not need replacing.

Additional costs could be having the crank journals ground and the full bearing shells and thrust washer kits,
Replacement camshafts, head skim, valves and guides....
The list simply goes on and on, dependent upon what the mechanics see.

On the whole though, typical V6 engines are not really worked hard in normal ownership, so should not have much wear and tear.

It helps to find a garage that specialises in engine reworking and who know how the engine is put together, and any tricks of the trade to avoid or spot inherent design flaws or peculiarities.

Robsey pretty much covered from all angles.

Personally speaking, I’m getting my cavalier turbo engine rebuilt and it’s costing a lot...

It’s stripped to individual components and head /block have been chemically dipped to clean all the passageway - so going the full extra hog and beyond!!!

Due to the use, wear and tear it was sent to professional engineering firm

Most of the main components have been replaced with new high quality parts... and its not finished yet.

Labour charges are high unless you know someone or agree on a fixed price from the offset (excluding parts)

Just make sure you’re in no rush to get it back - if you’re going to get in done, get it done right first time

Depends how far you want to go.

If you are doing a full dip, strip and fitting all new parts throughout, you could probably double my initial estimate.

Personally I am a fan of using as much of the original engine as possible, changing only parts that need to be changed and keeping all known good components.
I hope that is also the mind-set of the garage.

But that is just me - an avid fan of
"you don't fix what isn't broke".
