Vauxhall Cavalier diplomat 1994 problem with flashing “S”

Hello there,
I've noticed in the past few days that when I am driving a flashing S light comes on the dash (the same one that comes on when in sports mode).

So I did a bit of research and found out that the auto selector part can be taken off and cleaned. So I did this and put it back on today. I’ve just done a test run and as soon as I did 10miles and the temp gauge was near 95c the flashing “S” came back on.
I put it into reverse and checked that the reverse lights come on and they do.

So, what else can I look at or do to try and solve this problem as in 6 weeks I’m trying to drive it to Monte Carlo and back for my 40th in the bust a Rally.

I was given the car by a family relation and the first thing I did was a full service, mot. Hoses had to be changed as they had perished and they also changed the rad, water pumper and cam belt.

I’ve tried the garage again for advice but they have no idea atm and also haven’t got the diagnostic equipment to find the fault.

Can anyone help ??

You do not need specialist diagnostic equipment to test the car.

There is a simple process involving a "paper clip" test.

Shorting the correct pins in the diagnostic socket under the bonnet with the ignition on should cause the (S) light to flash out a two-digit numerical sequence.

This will tell you what the ECU sees as an error.
