Exhaust Gas Recirculation basically takes a bit of exhaust fumes and reburns it to make the emissions a bit cleaner.
Isnt it the silver redbull can thing between rocker cover and the inlet on a couple of rubber pipes (ive not owned an 1.8)

Taking it off would cause oil and grime to spill everywhere which is not recommended. As for MOT i cannot say what happens, but the E.G.R. valve is... look just behind the cam cover, top of the engine, before the big plastic top hat, with big GM written across it. There will be a silver- ish plate with a hose running behind the top hat. That itself is the EGR valve on the 1.8 blocks. Considering its the C18NZ (fuel injection) block. Just 2 bolts to undo. Quite tricky to get to, but i cant remeber quite which size they are. Refer to a Haynes Manual or such. Cleaning it is simple enough, plenty of valve cleaner or WD-40 and a brush, and you should get it clean quite quickly. To be fair, it does its job well and will get through an MOT emissions test quite easily, but if not, just follow the simple steps
Andrei.

The missus' mk4 Astra developed hesitation that was traced to a worn EGR (it was kinda juddery under partial load), so rather than spend a fortune replacing the thing or messing around trying to clean it I simply blanked it off. Since then we have found that the car feels like it pulls a little stronger under partial accelleration. Have the first MOT for it coming up so I'll find out then if it fails the emissions test...

Go to Vauxhall, order the EGR blanking kit for the c18NZ (the part number is in one of Adam5344's post's) it's about £9 or something, made a difference to the running of his car.

If your engine looks like that, its the silver can thing thats attached to the pipe coming off near the throttle body, pretty much dead centre of the picture

Is this picture angle any better. I think it is the circular metal bit behind the engine block?
