engine trouble

ok here goes all day yesterday car ran and started perfect as usual but thismorning i tried to start teh car and it was turning over slow so changed the battery and tried again was doing the same kept turning it over and it kicked so kept trying after a long time it started but was very rough sounds like its running on a cpl of cylinders but checked spark and plugs and there fine when it starts it will not acelerate the revs will not go up does any 1 have any ideas please

engine is a 1.8 8 valve

if i wasnt confused when this hapened im definatley confused left the battery disconected and tried it again there after over 30 mins of being disconected it started and still lumpy so slowly acelerated and it built up but didnt sound good then when teh revs came down it ran fine stoped and started and its fine any 1 got any ideas what it could have been

Moisture, bad / intermittant earth are my best guess's off the top of my head.

now you say moisture i did on monday ad a bottle of fuel treetment that has been sittign in my boot all through that bad weather mibby it got moisture in it in it well seams to be running fine now so lets hope it keeps that way

Sounds like it may have been damp. Is it carb or injection? Sticky injector cause similar symptoms?

8v vauxhall engines have a nasty habbit of destroying the plug lead on number 3 cylinder (When Driven hard) ive had that happen many times if the leads are not very old try wraping them in inslation tape also check the plugs if your have a cylinder down the plug or plugs will be damp after turning the engine over on a carb models

If you only had issues with no. 3 you aren't driving it hard enough, lol.
