Gearbox help needed ASAP

Post by SRi_stu »

Last night i broke down when my Cavalier suddenly wouldn't go into gear, I ended up having to walk home from the workshop i was recovered to, 2 hours and it rained :(
Anyway.....Thought at first the clutch had gone but now its looking more likely that the gearbox is finished. Will any other box fit the x20xev? I'm trying to decide if it'll be easier to just buy another car. I dont really fancy getting rid of the cavalier but I cant afford to have it off the road to long.
Tonight i had to get a taxi :o and tomorrow i may end up on a bus :o

Is every gear affected? Check your linkages, both under the gear lever and in the engine bay to see if anything has broken or come apart.

Am I a light sleeper or a heavy sleeper? Well that depends on how much I've had to drink...

Can you put it in gear without the engine running? If so it could be clutch related. Check the linkage as suggested, also if you can move the shaft that goes into the turret. Very occasionally when you get a jump out of gear situation one of the selector forks skips over partially and stops the whole lot functioning due to a combination of the interlock mechanism and the selector being in the wrong place to pull it back. If this happens the selector will only move a little bit. To fix requires the turret to be removed (4 bolts and a wiggle) so you can see the 3 selector forks inside and line them back up.
Of course it might not be this, but it's worth a look.

I'm pleased to announce the cavalier is home. I took the box out this mornin to find my 6 month old clutch in bits!
Euro car parts replaced it under warranty, took a further hour to find uif correct release bearing but its all back together and running again.
Just gotta sort out the speedo drive in the morning.

Good stuff, glad to hear it's not too disastrous.
