Strange scrapping noise when turning hard right

Post by badwez »

I've been on a 200 mile round trip to see my family today, and although my Cav ran really well, whilst turning right at speed (ie on the A27 roundabouts), there was a stange 'scrapping' noise :? I pulled over, but couldn't see anything amiss; anyone any ideas what it could be? It only happens whilst turning right, and at speeds of more than 25/30 mph. This happened two or three times.

I don't think it's wheel bearings; it's sounds like the wheel is catching on the wheel-arch liner. Really, really daft question, but my hatchback seems to have been fitted with a saloon exhaust system; I wondered if that could have anything to do with it?

If it's exhaust related, then get underneath, and shake the pipe left right and center, and see if it hits anything.

Backplate rubbing on the disc, I would put money on it. Pop the wheels off and bend them back to increase the clearances and it will probably solve it.

It could, you are absolutely correct, but a backplate is right at the top of the list and costs nothing to adjust.

Don't even need to take the wheels off, you can turn them full lock and reach from behind the wheel. :thumb

Could you make out what sort of scraping it was, i.e. metal or plastic as they would sound different. If it's plastic, sounds daft but check your bumpers to make sure they're secured properly. Other than that, wheel arch liners, or any bits of trim really. Metal wise, I'd be looking at springs, or anti-roll bars maybe, see if anything is touching that shouldn't be...

And are you absolutely sure that the exhaust isn't hitting anything? Open your windows next time you're out, to see if you can pinpoint the location of the noise.

I've checked all of the above, and everything seems fine. I'm sure it's the exhaust; I know it has the saloon version instead of the hatchback one; was there also a difference between the manual and the automatic??? I don't really want to replace the whole system, as it's only a few months old

The only difference in the saloon exhaust system is the back box is longer to accommodate the longer rear end.

Front and mid sections would be the same, as long as they're 8v sections. No difference between the auto-manual models as far as I've seen. Later ones had cats, earlier ones didn't.

Always difficult to offer suggestions for noises without hearing them.
