Handbrake cable question

Post by LETSTICK »

My 94 XE saloon , is due its M.0.T end of this month

handbrake cable , is so stretched , its used up all the ajustment :(

when i went to buy a new cable , the young lad asked me which side i needed :?

i know the one long cable , runs to one side with the ajuster , and the other shorter side goes to the other , if that makes sense

just thought they came as one , when ordering a whole handbrake cable for a saloon .

Aye, do both sides at the same time, saves freeing off rusted crap twice!

Yeah, you may aswell do both cables. You can probably pick them both up for £20-£25 and it means you only have to set it all up once.

Plus, you could bet that if you only change the one cable, the added stress on the old cable would cause that to break a month later and have to go through all the fun again.

While you have it off the car, strip the adjuster mech and clean it up with a wire brush, and grease it up well. I usually put way too mcuh grease on then wrap some cling film around it to keep the crap off. Then when you have to adjust it up again it's dead easy. ;)

That's a nice handy hint

Put the handbrake on in our Cav last night and bang went the cable! :(. The hadnbrake lever is now just loose - not sure if something has come undone or has snapped.
Not going to be back from work in time to look at it this week and as the car is used everyday it'll have to go to the local garage - kerrching!
Is it supposed to do that?

probably the shorter cable. can be done in an hour or two if you have fair access to the underside of the car.

You need to perfect the "rolling slowly while placing a brick infront of the wheel" operation!

Why not park it in gear? Even if its a diesel as long as it cant turn the engine over far it to fire it should be safe enough. Turning the wheels in towards the kerb stops that,

Is the Handbrake required for the M.O.T.?

Yes, it's tested as part of the braking test.
