grating noise

Post by FoxyCav »

just lately i've been getting a weird grating noise under braking, and it happened before when i was on full lock turning into a parking space???

i know the track rod ends are a bit worn, and i havent got around to changing the back brakes (only the fronts), anyone got a clue its getting a bit worrying???
could it be the back brakes???

I thought the trackrod ends where done for the MOT as for the grating, did it start after the brakes where done? I common problem is the catch plate behind the disc gets bent out of shape and scratches the back of the discs - it would be the first thing I'd look at - and hopefully a very simple none-cost fix :)

sorry my bag, forgot about them being done

the front brakes have been done for ages well before the mot, so i can only assume its the back ones??

Not sure, I'm only familuar with drum rear brakes (at the minute).
AS for grating, is it only when braking? Could it be something between the pad and the actual disc itself? You could try jacking up each corner in turn and spinning the wheel to see if the problem can be isolated to one wheel?

Just a few thoughts :)

More to the point being an LS - it's going to be drum brakes unless you've done the rear disc conversion (you havent said) so if it is, most likely either the handbrake isn't releasing the shoes, the adjuster is stuck or the rear shoes need replacing. Shouldn't take much if its the latter, just bloody fiddly.
