brake line spec/flaring

Post by jimzzr »

Well my old 94 1.7TD passed it's MOT with a couple of advisories. One of these was corroded a offside front brakepipe. Now I'd been thinking of getting some kit to make up pipes for a while.

One of the thing that is confusing to me is the sizing/flare types. Presumably what I want 3/16 pipe which is the same as 4.75mm? And kunifer is better than copper?

One tool which looks promising is this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Brake-Pipe-Fl ... 2a28352463

Now will this do the right sort of flare or do I need the 4.75 DIN flare tool? Also is a pipe bender necessary for a neat job?

Finally what fittings would I need?

Cheers

Jim

That is a different tool to one's I have seen and the one I have.
A bender really does make a neat job especially with kunifer as its quite hard.

That's ok for a quick repair and might be ideal for this guy.
However i don't like steel fittings, i only use brass as they never rust and seize up

Well if that's what rocks your boat then why not. A cup of tea/coffee by my side and lashings of my favourite biscuits is enough to enthuse me to get the job done.

Btw I think I'll purchase one one these tools, ends look great

You'll need a pipe bender, a flaring kit and a pipe cutter. All of which are available here:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/METRIC-BRAKE- ... 0756245481

You'll then want to get hold of some 8mm copper pipes and unions:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/280887932288

Also, you might need a crows foot spanner to get the old unions off / the new ones tightened. Don't be too heavy handed in case the old ones snap off while you're undoing them.

Oh, and don't forget to slide the unions onto the pipework BEFORE you start flaring!

Cheers guys.

So to confirm it's definitely the SAE 3/16 Flaring tool I need rather than the 4.75 DIN?

Also, although I think I'll probably get the kit as I'm bound to need it again for my old mr2 before long, I found a place that seems to make up pipes for very reasonable money. http://www.brakepipes2go.co.uk/

Thanks

I've always used 3/16 sae.
Was unaware of 4.75 din
I'm sure someone will confirm

I didn't either, but although the pipe size is effectively identical, it appears that there is a genuine difference in flare shape and fittings.

I'm pretty sure it's 3/16 sae and M10 x 1.0 fittings.
Don't forget a pipe cutter. You don't need a bender if your good with your hands

For reference should anyone else be interested

there's some good pics of both types of flare here

http://volksweb.relitech.com/brakeln.htm

and

http://www.fedhillusa.com/webnuts/common%20flares6.pdf

so basically bubble=din, cone=sae, fully threaded fitting must be sae, with shoulder could be either sae or din.

The seat of female fittings will be different with sae fittings having a cone that pushes into the end of the brake pipe.

Well to me it's the m10 fitting you buy to suit either din or sae.

I have used a flaring kit to make a pipe up for my cavs rear brakes they are real easy to do, practice first and bending wise I used my thumb and gently eased it slowly into the shape and It came out really neat.
I got my flaring kit from halfords and its a really good kit.
