Discs and pads
Hello all
Does anyone know what size the discs and pads are for a '94, 1.8i LS Hatch back Cavalier is?
I am thining about adding grovved or drilled and grooved brakes to the front wheels.
Does anyone know if SRI discs and pads will fit, WITHOUT modifiying the calipers?

Re: Discs and pads
as yours is 94 chances are you have the same brakes as an SRi anyhow... if you have vented discs. are your pads rectangle shaped with a curve on the hub edge or an odd shape with a protrusion at either end?

Re: Discs and pads
more than likely you have the same brakes as the SRi anyhow in which case buddy... £27.45 + p&p for a pair of new discs from here. At those prices you could have them machined for cheaper than off the shelf parts... probably...

Re: Discs and pads
K thanks for looking Squig.
I only ask as the MOT test showed the braking effort wasn't exactly great....
It was a pass JUST, but they need over-hauling.
I'll take the Cavalier back for MOT soon.... If it fails again with a new lambda sensor.
I'll take it off the road till after X-mas and do the following:
* Discs, both front axles
* Pads, Both Front axles
* Calipers, Both Front axles.
But that depends on how badly they come out, at the next MOT

Re: Discs and pads
If you stretch to it, Sherwoods do the disc and pad combos for £47 trade, if you ask nicely I'll use my trade card to order them if you want
AS for the callipers, what's wrong with them?

Re: Discs and pads
If you want to beef up the barkes on the cheap consider the v6 setup. You will have to get the discs redrilled to 4 stud but the rest should bolt on no worries, then slap some EBC green stuff pads on

Re: Discs and pads
Problem is, to do this you need to upgrade the calipers also.Squig wrote:If you want to beef up the barkes on the cheap consider the v6 setup. You will have to get the discs redrilled to 4 stud but the rest should bolt on no worries, then slap some EBC green stuff pads on
I've heard that if you're not happy about redrilling them to 4 stud, disks off an Alfa Romeo will fit, though I'm not sure which one (156?).
I would recommend upgrading to V6 brakes though. I changed the normal 2.0 brakes on my CDX to V6 (redrilled) and the diffrence is noticable, and as the disks off the V6 were in good condition, it was cheaper doing the whole conversion than buying a set of disks!
Re: Discs and pads
Sorry I did mean to include the calipers too

286mm discs with 57mm piston caliper if you're wondering... and now you know another reason we v6 owners look smug

Re: Discs and pads
I think Vectra 4 stud are the same? 286/ 288?
If so, that might be a cheaper option

Re: Discs and pads
vectra 4 stud are 256mm.
id just fit 288mm vectra 5 stud, and redrill disks and fit spigot rings, common as muck

Re: Discs and pads
are 8v hubs smaller than v6 ones then? as the vectra discs didn't fit my v6...

in what way?Squig wrote:are 8v hubs smaller than v6 ones then? as the vectra discs didn't fit my v6...
Not even sure how I'd start going about drilling though.
Re: Discs and pads
Ahhh I see 4x100pcd against 5x110pcd would mean the internal diameter of the discs where they attach to the hub would be smaller on the 4 stud app than the 5 stud on cavs... hence why the 5 stud vec discs don't fit as they are too small

Re: Discs and pads
easy as they are very slightly oversize holes anyway, just set the template onto the disk and line the holes up with the existing holesEnvoy CDX wrote:Not even sure how I'd start going about drilling though.
the centre punch the middle of the holes you need to drill (you can see in the middle where the lines cross) and drill a 13mm hole, disks are a lot softer than you give them credit for.
I know a guy who can open the middle of the disks up if you wanna go that way, id get a spare hub if you have one and say make that match that, hes cheap.Squig wrote:Ahhh I see 4x100pcd against 5x110pcd would mean the internal diameter of the discs where they attach to the hub would be smaller on the 4 stud app than the 5 stud on cavs... hence why the 5 stud vec discs don't fit as they are too small

Re: Discs and pads
This is true. I redrilled a set of disks in about an hour, but I was cheating using a drill that was designed to ream out holes (a couple of quid from Aldi, result!!). Don't forget if you're using the V6 disks on 2.0 hubs you'll need a set of spigot rings which you can get off ebay for about £15 posted.Gaz wrote:easy as they are very slightly oversize holes anyway, just set the template onto the disk and line the holes up with the existing holesEnvoy CDX wrote:Not even sure how I'd start going about drilling though.

Or you could just change the hub for the Vectra one. Worth doing if you need new wheel bearings anyway. I've had a look at the EPC and the Vectra hubs will fit on a Cav V6 bearing. It's the next mod I'm planning for my V6, so I'll post up on here when I do it.Gaz wrote:Envoy CDX wrote:Not even sure how I'd start going about drilling though.I know a guy who can open the middle of the disks up if you wanna go that way, id get a spare hub if you have one and say make that match that, hes cheap.Squig wrote:Ahhh I see 4x100pcd against 5x110pcd would mean the internal diameter of the discs where they attach to the hub would be smaller on the 4 stud app than the 5 stud on cavs... hence why the 5 stud vec discs don't fit as they are too small
Re: Discs and pads
Yeah that sounds like a plan but I'll kill the discs I have first... should take me 18mth or so

Here's a useful thread from another forum:

There's lots of discussion about this very topic, might be useful to people on here?

Re: Discs and pads
Might see about getting a set of spare front legs for the cav and doing all the hub / disc work on that first - will need a set of wheels to go on it as well.
