Just had the 1990 Cavalier MOT'd with a pass and advisories.

So new ticket issued today and advisories of 1.slight escape of exhaust gasses not a biggie...the new centre section i fitted some weeks ago? the new joint gasket is blowing .i will fix this by loosening the joint and apply exhaust paste.
2. both front suspension lower arm joints are worn but not enough to cause a failure. new lower arms will be sourced and fitted asap.

Question to you guys. other than O/E where would be the best place to buy these arms?.

Just prior to the MOT the 28 year old tyres decided to let me know it was their time to retire...no pun intended.
so after a search for 14" rubber i soon found out that the options where kinda limited i.e. lack of availability.
in the end i managed to find 4 Hankook Kinergy Eco that seem to have good ratings viz a viz economy, grip and noise.
OK so the tyres are new and first impressions suggest a quiet drive with good compliance through the suspension(i prefer a bit floaty than hard suspension.) so with any luck the car with feel better planted on the road and i can relax through the twisty bits. at £260 for 4 fitted and balanced i was pleased enough with what i bought.

Congrats on the pass...

Sounds like you have 195...r14s.
I wasn't aware of this issue until a month or so back.
Mine are 175- 70r14s. A whole lot easier to get, so too will be my soon to be sourced 195-60r15s.
Not sure why 195 - r14s are no longer available from the big brands - weird.

Bottom suspension arms. I presume we are talking wishbones.

I always get Febi brand wishbones from any Ebay seller with a good rating.
Febi are meant to be OE so should be fit for the job.

The exhaust does indeed sound like a simple enough job.
For me it would be getting on the floor to work under the car that creates problems
And I shudder at the thought of trying to get back up off the floor afterwards. Ha ha.

Cheers Robsey. yep the tyres are 195 14s and i could have bought Goodyears but decided to go the Hankook route as i had good experience with them over many years running major fleets up and down the country when i was still working as a fleet engineer. so thanks for the heads up on the Febi brand wishbones. i will be looking to change them soon enough.

Cheers Mazza, the car is about to reach 39000 so just about run in it only took 28 years. i use it every day usually with a smile on my face. the condition is exceptional. i will be looking after this car till i pop my clogs i reckon.
so no plans for any major mods or anything although i wouldn't say no to a set of alloys but other than that i won't change anything from stock.

Nice to see your car in the flesh bob, very very original and we'll worth a bit of investment over the piece to keep it good. If you ever want me to give it a once over gives a shout. Hope you get some security set up as these cars are all to easy a target for the street chavs!

I agree about an alarm and imobiliser.
Plenty on the bay of e for not too much money.

My Scorpion is quite simple to fit and was not too expensive.
Fitting instructions are brief but just about adequate.

Or you can get simple "transponder fobs" that will not let the car start if it isn't within 10 metres of a fob.
Only a few wires to immobilise the fuel pump. And no need to remember to set an alarm. Just keep a fob in your pocket - job done.

I looked at "passive" security and the disklok seemed to be the most effective one.
