Rear spring seats
Well the lower rear spring seats have given up.
I thought the problem was the broken drop link but noticed this when the car was up where did all that rust come from So it still drove home handling like bambi on ice every bump
I'm assuming this is a fixed part on the beam as i can only find top spring seats for sale.
Does anyone have a photo of what it should look like?
Haynes and parts catalogue don't show it clearly, it looks flat but i'm sure when i last saw it there were 3? welded strips supporting a raised seat
-----------------------------
On the brakes side, the months-old nearside handbrake cable spring has vanished. I think it was intimidated by the strength of the offside spring...
The part i'm after appears to be 90345813 but the catalogue's confused me, that's just the cutaway frisbee, the central part isn't greyed out.
If it's right, how is it held in place

Re: Rear spring seats
Here is the spring seat on my car.
Before and after powder coating.
It looks like a flat disc, with a big nipple protruding up in the middle.
Quite a simple shape to get made.
Before
After
From my visual interpritation.
A big disc with a 'C' cut out of one edge.
Probably 2mm thick steel.
Then a ring around the edge - again with a C cut out the same as the main disc.
Then a centrally mounted top hat to locate within the bore of the spring.
The rubber seat buffers were still available from Vauxhall dealers in 2016.
Part number - 90 305 263

Re: Rear spring seats
That's a hell of a lot of rust. The ones on my old V6 gave out as well, I had no clue about it, the mechanic said he lifted the car on a ramp and the springs basically fell out from the back.
He actually fabricated a pair of new seats and welded them into place, cost me a few quid but a) couldn't find spares and b) it had to be done there and then.

Re: Rear spring seats
That's the springs i'm after and the description has made it clearer, thanks Robsey. The pictures helped confirm i'm losing it lol.
What a difference the powder coating has made, if only....
I'm worried about mine falling out on a speed bump on it's weekly shopping trip. I spoke with the mechanic last week about fabricating the seats.
There and then on the other hand no chance, that seems like a distant memory....
Between Robsey's pics & description and the new seat buffers I have I can maybe minimalize my time off road by getting them made up beforehand. The disc shields are in the post
When that's done I can finally address the crash damage

It didn't look that bad in May, i think it's rusting out of boredomCavalier342 wrote:That's a hell of a lot of rust. The ones on my old V6 gave out as well, I had no clue about it, the mechanic said he lifted the car on a ramp and the springs basically fell out from the back.

I am feeling that exact level of concern about my car.ilovedmymantas wrote:

After standing for six months, I suspect rust will be creeping back in

Re: Rear spring seats
The disc shields have arrived already!
I bought them from a place that had been on my watch list for a couple of years...
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VAUXHALL-CAV ... %7Ciid%3A1
….I must admit I was dubious about the quality when I saw the pic but the price seemed good.
After purchase I asked about confirming the part number (the size and shape were correct). The seller replied he didn't have access to Vauxhall numbers
I was pleasantly surprised when the box arrived
There's one pair left so a bargain for someone

Re: Rear spring seats
I'm wondering what one these are for? I know it isn't for rear drums, I do have the rear plates off my diplomat (facelift) but the middle of the plates, where these are empty, have a big plate that the bearing mounts on it. I'm wondering are these for earlier rear disc models, as the bearing was in the combined disc/drum and hub was part of the axle?ilovedmymantas wrote:The disc shields have arrived already!

Re: Rear spring seats
I know what you mean. Sometimes I find parts catalogues seem to have conflicting or confusing information.
I was expecting what you describe because the catalog said so :
https://webautocats.com/epc/vauxhall/j89/j/27/
I'm still not sure myself but when I was searching for the part number with my reg these came up and the numbers match, so fingers crossed.
https://www.buycarparts.co.uk/vauxhall/ ... back-plate
I still can't figure how they stay in place
