How2 - Rebuild your hydrolic lifters - in progress

Post by Gaz »

Does your car sound like a typewriter in the morning ?
Sounds like your lifters are jammed up

This is a guide on how to clean them up and quieten them down, they are about £8 each from vauxhall so its worth making the best of what you have.
There are cheap ebay ones but there are plenty of horror stories of the collapsing after a few thousand miles. So this is a guide on how to clean them up.

Im using a spare set that i have saves leaving the car in pieces while you clean them

You will need

  • A Container for the lifters to soak in - think this is an old lunchbox- just check it is watertight

Some dregreaser - liquid rather than spray

(same can be achieved with petrol but it does evaporate quickly)

    A lump of soft wood
Take your lifter and leave them to soak as long as possible - ive left these in for 5 days

After 5 days this is the amount of dirt that has just come out of these lifters. Its not nice and its doing you no favours

You need your lump of wood

Hit the lifter face down on the wood, hard. It will shock the middle out - wear gloves as it hurts your hand doing 16. It will take some effort but they do come out. You may find after a few hits you can pull them out by hand

You now need to push the centre of the lifter in to get all the old oil out - use a biro its ideal, work the lifter with your fingers till you've pumped out all the oil oil

You will now have all the lifters stripped down, leave these in clean degreaser for as long as you can

To be cont....
