Gearbox oil change

Post by Mk3alan »

I have changed the gearbox oil a couple of times and as we know there is no drain plug, so I have removed the differential cover to release the old oil.
This works OK but obviously requires a new gasket, and the one I bought recently was £12!
So while the cover was off this time I silver soldered a bush into it and fitted the same size drain plug that's fitted to the engine sump (19mm AF)
Looking forward to the next oil change!

Interesting, so it would be like draining the ATF instead of how it usually is.

So has the automatic got a drain plug?
My auto Astra has no drain plug so I had to take the bottom sump cover off - with a gallon of ATF the other side - fun!

Yes, there is a large plug, 19 or 20mm, can't remember, it's facing towards the offside, I was told that was the drain plug and certainly worked when I changed the ATF once on my Cavalier.

That's a really nice job you've done there.

Nice idea, but you only get half the oil out. There is a shelf that retains oil below the main gear cluster.

Not sure about that! there seemed to be quite a lot in the bowl I drained it into?
If there is some left at least it will be diluted with the new oil!
