Would that be 90 540 998 by any chance?
Another options is 93 165 290

And 93 165 260 for transfer boxes :p

The codes given a few posts ago are from the Haynes Manual.

I've asked Opie if they supply GM oils in general and 0998 in particular. I can add ..290 but what is a transfer box if it's not a gearbox?

That is for 4x4 vehicles.

I included the 4x4 transfer box oil listing, because EPC (electronic parts catalogue) did.

Opie won't do GM's own oil.
Only your dealer will.
And from memory, dealer supplied oil is no more expensive than any other premium grade fluid.

Easy - the choice is between .. 290 and .. 290 because ..998 is no longer supplied (by BSM our local dealer).
.. 290 is their bog standard oil that they supply for all current gearboxes, sticky or not. £6.55 + VAT per litre and he thought the drained GB capacity was c. 2 - 3 litres.

The .. 290 they tell me is a "75 - 90" oil spec.

Go to GM for GM oil! Contrary to popular belief, your local Vauxhall dealer's parts desk is your friend!

A transfer box is a piece of equipment that forms part of the transmission of a four-wheel drive vehicle. In theory, it's a bit like having a gearbox attached to your gearbox (although many modern transfer boxes are chain driven rather than gear driven). In the case of the Cavalier Turbo 4x4, it transfers power to the rear wheels via the propshaft/diff.

In this picture of a Getrag F28 gearbox (as found on Cavalier/Calibra Turbos) you can see the transfer box attached (on the right):

You more or less echoed my comments.
Labour charges may be dear, but standard consumables are quite competitively priced.

I think that he did visit his local dealer :thumb

Very interesting for my tec education and street cred but I think I'll go without the transfer box for now thank you very much. Does anyone know off hand what the capacity of an F16 (gearbox not plane) is? Local dealer was unsure on the phone.

Think it's about a liter. I put in a liter when I changed the oil on my old Cav, that had an F16 box.

Found it - in the Haynes manual that someone very kindly pdf'd me: 1.9 litres.

I don't know if your gearbox has the same level check as the F28 etc, but when I serviced my 'box it was a case of 'fill it until it seeps out of the drain hole on the side of the casing'.

And to reiterate what I've said in the past, GM fluids are top notch.

According to Robsey's Book of Words the F16, F18 and F20 are all the same at 1.9 L [F10 and F13 = 1.6 L] and the F28 doesn't exist! Not surprising you had to use brute force and ignorance ;)

Ye but you won't get all the oil out, hence why you'd only need a liter or just over when re-filling.

Easy there tiger!! :o
You'll get me shot for plagiarism.
But then I think they owe me commission for all the references that I make to their publications.

Agreed, you won't get the full 1.9 litres of oil out of the box, unless you completely strip and rebuild it.
Also depends how long you allow the oil to dribble out from the cover plate aperture.

And I do recall that filling is until it dribbles out from the filler hole.
Not forgetting to refit the bottom cover plate and gasket first.

**looks skyward as he remembers the time that he wasted 4.5 litres of engine oil, because the sump plug was freshly cleaned on the slam panel - oops!!**

I recently have changed the oil in my CDi box (and fitted drain, see my post)
I fitted the new gasket from Vauxhall which looks great with like an 'O' ring moulded around the inner edge - but it leaked!
All perfectly clean and torqued up correctly, I got hold of the earlier plain gasket and with a very thin application of blue hylomar it has been fine since.
Get the older gasket! Alan
After some digging Autovaux have only been able to come up with a Mk 2 gasket (later version) which I understand shares the same F16 c/r box as the Mk3 SRi. In their words "it seems to be a thick gasket paper". Is this what I want??? Or is the CDi box/gasket quite different from the SRi?

I 'believe' the gearbox casing is similar to my CDi box, its the gearing that's different (mine is wide ratio)
The gasket (mk2) that I took back to Vauxhall dealer because it leaked was aluminium with a moulded rubber inner shape which is supposed to compress between the two faces but in my opinion would not get compressed as it looked like it missed the flanges of the box?
I got my money back.
The gasket I fitted which seems ok came from a Vauxhall dealer on ebay, it was a complete set of gearbox gaskets and the diff cover one was like a hard waxed cardboard type of material. I have seen that sort of thing sold as gasket material.
I put it together with a very thin wipe of Blue Hylomar on the faces.

Alan

Sounds a bit complicated! If the Mk 2 isn't the answer I wonder if I shouldn't just go to the Vauxhall parts people and ask them for whatever is available for the SRi Mk3, latest version?

Normal supply chain for a replacement bottom gasket (regardless of shape) for the F16 has failed. Autovaux to the rescue I hope. 2nd gear selection is distinctly sticky till warmed up.
