Mk3 Cavalier 1.8i with a 1987 MK2 Cavalier Multipoint Engine fitted on approximetly 70,000 miles.
I was thinking 5/40 non synthetic - what would you suggest?

The Year - 1995
model - Cavalier CDX
engine - 2.5 v6
style of driving - "aggressive" road

Any suggestions

All 5w-40 oils are classed as synthetic, but many under a play on words are hydrocracked mineral oils so still 100% mineral base. This would make a good top option. Alternatively a 10w-40 semi synthetic with regular changed.

Have a look at 5w-40 and 10w-40 oils from Motul and Fuchs.

Plenty to choose from, it really does depend on how good you want to go and how much you want to spend.

Next up its to a 5w-40 synthetic changed every 8-10,000 miles or once a year which ever comes first.

i just did a oil change on my 1990 c20xe cav gsi2000, i usualy use genuine gm 10-40 oil and filter as it only costs me £15ish trade (i usualy but about 5 or 6 filters and 20/30 litres of oil to last me) any way i used a gm filter ans some 10-40 semi oil (car lube of similar cheap make) plus i put 1 litre of lucas oil stabiliser in so ive got 3.5l oil and 1 l oil stabiliser,has any body else used this lucas oil stabiliser stuff,it aparently reduced cold start wear and gives added protection,it even claims to slow iol leaks down which is handy with my typical weaping red top sumpo lol,

if you dont know wot the hell im going on about its the stuff thats normaly in the little display machine on the counter of most motor parts trade counter.
its a clear box with a series of plastic cogs that has a handle sticking out of the top cog so you rotate the handle.watch the cogs turn with the oil addadive coation the cogs,they usualy have 2 clear boxes one has the addative the other doesent.

In future dont bother with oil additives, just use a decent oil instead. 10w-40 semi is not just that they come in different qualities and Carlube is not a goodun.

Use a well branded oil next time and save yourself the money on the additive.

im changing the oil in my sri redtop i always use castrol magnatec but do u suggest a better oil and why thanks

If the car is standard with regular changes it will be fine. For what it is it is over priced, you can get an equally good 10w-40 semi for much less money, have a look at this one http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-990-fuchs-t ... e-oil.aspx

If you really want to treat it then go for a 5w-40 synthetic, these are better quality, protect and lubricate better then mineral based oils.

2 cars,

One a 2.5 v6 automatic. Used in winter. (175bhp, ball park)

Two, a 3.0 moddified v6 used in summer, engine tends to loose oil pressure when really hot at idle (200-240 BHP, ball park)


What would you say?

Oh and my Gf's car. 1.4 16v tigra, lady driver, daily use.

For the Tigra and the 2.5, I would use a 5w-40 synthetic and you will find those through the link below.

Out of those, the best ones are the Silkolene Pro S, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Gulf Formula G, Fuchs Supersyn and Mobil Synt S are good, cheaper alternatives.

As a budget choice, a 10w-40 will be fine and I would either go for the Fuchs XTR or Motul 6100

If you are losing pressure when hot in the 3.0, go for a 10w-50

Both are really good oils, absolute top of the range ones, so go with any brand preference you have.

Yeah its a good oil, but bear in mind the 15w will not provide as good cold start as a 10w or 5w.

hey oil man i`ve a 2.5v6 aboout 220bhp it doesnt get used every day but gets used pretty hard every time its out.
it gets plenty of oil changes just when it gets dark on the dipstick always 10w 40 gm stuff
wat do your recon i should be on?
i used the 10w40 sinse i rebuilt the engine last year
