Sound proofing SRi hatch

Post by Telegram Sam »

I thought that I had seen somewhere a "How to do it" thread or similar on soundproofing. I would be interested to hear the experience of anyone who has (successfully) installed extra soundproofing. Is my memory at fault?

Dynamat is your friend.

That does ring a bell - but I suspect that there's rather more to (installing) it than just buying a roll on eBay .. which is what I thought I had read on the topic in a how-to workshop or other post somewhere.

Dynomat is too expensive. Use silent coat. It's what I used on my cdx. And what pioneer UK used on my new pickup truck when they upgraded the audio system at the factory.

I take it you were happy with the result? Was it a DIY job? Reason I ask is cos I've heard opinions saying that soundproofing cars built when ours were is a waste of money - something I'd rather like to prove to be wrong. >> Possible to pop round sometime to see what you did on the CDX??

not soundproofed our current cars, but I did use a roll of dynamat of my RS turbo years ago to kill off some sound in the boot area. I just stripped out the hatch carpet, and put dynamat down above where the exhaust ran, and put big strips around the spare wheel well and along the back panel. I found that warming the stuff made it easier to fit into the contours of the boot floor and that i didn't need to cover every square inch to make a difference, as you just need to have enough on the panel to stop it vibrating in use. I'm not sure what is on the market now as i must have done my turbo well over 10 years ago

There seems to be a wide range of different pack sizes and thicknesses of Silentcoat on offer online. To do the boot might be relatively simple but I'd have doubts about doing other areas for fear of not being able to get the interior trim and panels back as they were originally. Brackets in my experience have a habit of breaking.

I used 1 pack of dynamat to do the boot on my escort (series two turbo, mk4 shape), and it was about 1 mm thick, and less than 1 square metre. If you want to have a go, i'd do the boot area, inside the inner rear wings and put some on the inside of the four door skins. just doing those big panels will stop a lot of panel drumming. if you don't want to strip the whole interior you could always underseal the floorpan from below which would have a similar, but reduced effect. The only place that would be a real pain to do would be the bulkhead behind the dash, but you might be able to put squares of material on bare areas with access via the instrument panel or glove box

Tks for the route map. I think that doing the area beyond the boot would probably need more (dismantling and reassembly) expertise and facilities than I have but may be some thicker Silentcoat around the boot would have an effect (for starters at least).

A re-shelling situation strikes me as the ideal time to think about Silentcoat-ing if that is the most cost-effective solution at the present time?
