Roof Lining coming orf!

Post by Mk3alan »

My roof Lining is coming off! No doubt brought about by the recent summer weather.
I had trouble a couple of years ago with the covering on the screen piller covers, the vinyl had shrunk and come unstuck.
I removed the covering and glue filled and silk emulsion painted them and they look alright.
Once again the vinyl on the roof Lining seems to have shrunk in a couple of places and is hanging down. I am quite sure more will follow.
Does anyone know if the material that the vinyl is stuck to is in one piece? and is it possible to once the old vinyl is removed, recover it, like you would paper a ceiling?

A few people have done it in the past. LemonMonkey on Cavweb did a how2 on it.

It is one piece, rather like compressed cardboard. It would be possible to cover with care to avoid wrinkles if you can find a large enough piece of covering material.

I kind of had the same problem even though my roof lining has been redone in the past (rather poorly though). the roof lining itself is only one piece, as said above. There are also places where you can get it refurbished. I don't know exactly where, since I'm not from the UK.

Or you can get some spray glue & stick it back in situ you may get a little gap around the edge because the material is stretched when fitted in the factory, but you can get a decent smooth finish if you take your time.

I think you can try stretching it by using a hair dryer.

My diplomat had a terrible roof lining problem when I first got it.
I ended up getting it reupholstered in the end. I got it replaced with a nice cotton cloth material.
Much better than the original vinyl but still in keeping with the original interior.
It did cost a far bit to do though.

Thanks all. At the moment there is only 2 areas coming off, bit to the right of the interior light and the rear corner.
When putting it back into position it seems a bit short so I will give the hair dryer a go.
Don't really want to get involved with the whole lot at the moment.
What would be the best thing to stick it back with?

Some form of contact adhesive I'd imagine would do the job. Something designed for fabric.
