Dashboard replacement?

Post by GLC »

Hi everybody. My cavalier dashboard is cracked at the top in the centre just below the windscreen. Has been like it since i brough it and ive decided it needs to go. Just one problem, ive never took a dashboard apart and as this is my only roadworthy car so i need to get this right! Should be able to get one from the scrappy i use easy enough. But how an where do i start and should i tackle this myself. Thanks.

fella I drove my old GSi astra without a dash or any of the interior (aside from clocks, steering wheel and seats) for weeks and only ever got laughed at by the plod for being a bit of a nutter... but, once you remove the trim on the dash, switches etc etc, it's 5 bolts and you can remove it... refitting a new one is more awkward than difficult.

its not that hard, the shell of the dash takes mins its all the extra bits that take time, if you had the dash next to the car you should have it swapped in a day easy.

There are 3 bolts along the top (2 behind the tweeters and one in the middle under a cap) and one at each end at the base of the pillar, thats it, the rest is held in by the loom etc.

It's the loom that takes the time to be honest, don't try and cheat by not strapping it up either as it will bite you later on when trying to put the heater controls and such back in.

Enjoy, I spent 2 days on mine, that was stripping it out of the other car, and putting into my current one. Half a day was spent looking for a wheel puller though.

As long as you have all the tools handy and work methodically, then you shouldn't experience any problems.

Thank' s for everone's comments. Will have to keep an eye out for a good dashboard at the scrappy. My m8 is a vauxhall fan an he said it's a nightmare job an not to attempt it. But im fussy sod so im gunna try an do it when i get the chance. Fingers crossed it comes off. I'll let you know if it happens.
