Here's the current situation.

Fitted new stat and temp gauge sensor. Ran to day to and from work, slower to heat up but on the way back over the 100 mark to half way between red and 100 mark. Stopped at home, fan going full blast.
Let it cool a bit, then ran without cap to boiling point to expel air. Top and bottom hose very hot, radiator top and bottom hot.

Other than get a new rad, is there anything I've missed?

It's not leaking or corroding is it?

I recall saying that I couldn't think of a reason why it would be your pump

did you perchance give the impeller a bit of a twizzle before you fitted it?
Did the pulley move with it? At the same speed/ratio/whatever that you were twizzling the impeller?

Rad is remarkably unleaky with no signs of old leaks or corrosion. My local garage fitted the pump, so I cannot say to what condition it was in. I suppose that could be the problem...

When it's hot is it circulating, rev it and you should see the water traveling through the expansion bottle from the small hose on the top. If you haven't got that then worth a closer look at the pump, although the rad could be partially blocked restricting the flow. Just have to work through the possibilities logically Dave.

Thanks P, the only four things I can think of are pump, radiator, radiator thermostat and a partially blocked water jacket.
