Thoughts on engine transplants?

Post by Ontical »

If it’s possible to transplant another engine in the 1.6 mk3 Envoy petrol, which will do the job?

I’m thinking in case I can’t get parts anymore for the model I have.

Anything is possible depending on what you want, most other Vauxhall engines will fit straight in, most people tend to go for the 2.0 16V engine but the V6 will fit straight in but you will need to change the gearbox, driveshafts, brakes & subframe as well.

More or less what he has said.

The popular engines are C20XE and 20SEH / C20NE / 20NE.

The C20XE or "Red Top" is by far the most popular especially amongst enthusiastic drivers (boy racers) in all models especially Cavaliers, Corsas and Novas.
So these are the most expensive to get hold of.

X25XE is not a particularly common engine in relation. As stated, it will require a lot of donor parts from a V6 Cavalier including front subframe, better brakes all round...
The list goes on.

Any engine change will need the loom including sensors, fuel pump relay and ecu, fuel pump and potentially exhaust etc.

If your looking of best bang for buck then the X20XEV ecotec would be a good option.
People tend to give them a bad rap because they arn't as powerful and the red top or as reliable as the older 8v engines.
However, you can pick up low mileage examples for very little money.
You will probably want some brake upgraded with this engine though and you will require a better fuel pump.

As Robsey said, the C20NE or 20NE is a great reliable option too. Plenty of them about for little money.
But as with the ecotec, it's not completely necessary but you might want a brake upgrade and you will need a better fuel pump.

Don't forget the 1.8 C18NZ either, they are very easy to get hold of and they will plum right in with the loom of the 1.6 (that's in you have the normal C16NZ2 and not the e-drive 1.6). Also no brake or fuel pump upgrades will be necessary if you go for this option.

c18nz is underrated and very reliable. And, looks exactly like you're current engine and box setup pretty much.
Same brake setup too so shouldn't be an issue there. springs will be the same too.

It's all good fun and can be done inside of a weekend with a basic tool kit other than an engine crane.
