Power steering fluid leaking

Post by Vkaks »

Hello,

I have just converted my vectra a 2000 4x4 to 2 wd and I have got a problem with power steering fluid leaking from the top. I plugged the hole with a bolt after removing the transfer box, but it didnt seem to work this way.

Where exactly is the leak coming from? Can't see anything obvious in the photo that you linked. Could be a bad gasket or washer letting oil through?

I am sorry to say that I cannot see anything that would help me answer from that photo.

I am not sure why removing the transfer box would affect the power steering.
Unless you caught the pipework whilst dropping the box out.

If you have plugged a hole with a bolt, then did you use the correct size bolt?
These are not metric threads, but instead imperial pipe threads, so you may have a crossed thread or simply the wrong diameter, pitch or thread profile.

Also - use a copper washer (not brass), and if necessary use ptfe tape wrapped around the bolt thread.

It is leaking from the reservoir, the image I posted was where the transfer box was connected to and that is where I plugged it with a bolt

From the reservoir? That's a strange one. Check the thread on the reservoir cap for any signs of cracks or splits. Could need a replacement cap. Or is it leaking from one of the pipe outlets?

I believe its under high pressure? As where the transferbox was piped into I just bolted that hole. There is no cracks on the cap.

I don't quite understand this, are you able to take a photo or two of the power steering reservoir? And is it 100% power steering fluid?
