Airlock in cooling system

Please,could anyone tell me how to get an airlock out of my Cav 1.7TD cooling system.

They are suppoed to be self bleeding, but I'd found it doesn't always work.

Do the usual squashing the pipes as it warms up with the cap off.
I've seen it often appear to boil over as the thermostat open, at that point, I turn it off put the cap on and then let it cool. Top it up when cool and it's usually fine.
