Idle control valve 20xe gsi 2000

Hi, just a question does any body know what symtoms I would have if my idle control valve gone bad,as I have rebuilt a gsi 2000 and nearly there but just can't get thing to tick over properly.it basically cuts out,but when's it's warm it ticks over all be it that sometimes it does dip then pick up again.i got another problem with this engine just thought I would mention as not sure whether the two are linked,temerature goes sky high and the fan will not kick in but it does work cus I checked it by putting earth and pos to battery,I have put new thermo switch on and thermstat but could it be possible these are bad?the car is on tick over not driving along road,as I haven't been able to get it mot'd yet and in middle of sorting my gearbox selector out lol.any help much appreciated thanks.

mines is playng hard to start black plugs up and down revs high
