What are THESE things called love?

I am trying to understand how the vacuum system works on my 1.8i
My workshop manual says nothing about these 2 items:

Can anyone identify these for me and tell me what they do?

the bottom is the egr valve. i have removed mine and plated it over and blocked up the pipe with a screw.

I might be wrong, but the top one looks like a heater bypass valve.
