Post by chrisash86 »

Just started my 2.0lt 16v I fired it up then it seemed to splutter and cut out. tried a few times and still did it. I then got out of the car and it smelt like eggs ! Any ideas??

Eggs is usually the exhaust smell when the engine goes from idle to rev.
It shouldn't smell of eggs at any other time.

I would be tempted to think that the catalyst may have collapsed and is choking the exhaust.
Does it rattle when you bash the box?
You could disconnect the cat at the down pipe flange... if it now runs much better, then it is a blockage in the exhaust.

How long is it since the engine last ran..?
I understand that dirty old fuel can smell a bit funky, and does not burn very well.
But you would be talking years old fuel rather than months.

I have 8 month old fuel in my C20NE and it still smells and runs okay.

I have had the car three weeks and run it nearly everyday, it had a new center section of the exhaust on two weeks ago, it's only in the past few days It's not started everytime spot on and sounded a little chuggy ( if that makes sense

Maybe they disturbed the cat section when fitting the middle box.
maybe I am barking up the wrong tree.

Other causes of a splutter could be lack of fuel due to a faulty fuel pump or fuel pump relay.
Can you hear the fuel pump running?
Or check fuel flow from the hose going into the throttle body.

I assume that fuse 11 is still intact.
first fuse(far left end) in the middle row - yellow 20 amp blade fuse.
