Rough running on start up.

Post by iangsi »

I have a problem with my 95 1.8 single point injection cav, On start up it runs really rough for about a minute or two then settles down & idles perfectly, this happens when ever it's started being hot or cold the rough running is less when hot though. It also chucks out black soot while running rough.
Your thoughts on a solution would appreciated.

Sounds like the reburn system playing up that valve on the inlet system in front of the injection unit I'm sure some one will post a pic up of what I mean

Sounds like you mean the EGR valve.

looks like a flying saucer sat behind the engine sort of in front and to the right of the air intake top hat.

Starting can be very difficult or lumpy if the EGR valve has stuck open whilst cold.
Soot from the exhaust being dragged into the inlet will not burn.

It could also be the injector sticking open. I've seen a few do it.

Thanks for the replies I made a mistake it's a 93 car & I've taken the EGR valve off. It starts first time without any problems.

Pop the intake pipe off and watch down the throttle body next time you start it. The injection is a clear pulse, but if it's sticking it just buckets fuel in a single stream.

Rite fitted a new bosch O2 sensor & start up is much improved as is the general running & idle, but this morning when I started it the engine light stayed on but ran fine half way through my journey while stopped at some lights I decided to turn the engine off & restart to see if this would clear the light but the bugger refused to start again. So the GSI was pressed into service as a tow truck, so the car is now at home while I 'm stuck at work.

It now starts from cold but if I turn it straight off it won't restart again. So I've now done the paperclip test & it flash's so fast with the engine running I could not count them, but with just the ignition on it's saying 15 which is coolant temp high voltage would this stop it from starting ? Now to try & track down a new coolant sensor.

I've answered my own question it does stop it from restarting I had an old sensor out of my mk2 astra SRI which I plugged in to test & it now starts first time every time, new sensor found at my local Vauxhall dealer £16 so reserved it.
