What causes the revs staying high when changing gear on my 1.8i cav mk3,only seems to do once up to temp?

Hi to try and help out I have a couple of questions to ask you first how many rpm does the car rev to when you change gear?
Does this only happen when you change up i.e. Does the revs drop straight to idle say when you change down gear?
And what is warm idle speed? Assuming you have a rev counter.

My mates 1.8 Zafira used to do that all the time, he didn't take any notice but it drove me mad!

I could never really confirm the problem with mine doing this but since I changed Idle Control Valve it seems to have settled down and hardly ever does this.
