Hi all
First of all I apologise as I only seem to post on here when I have a problem but....
I have a 1990 Cavalier SRi 8v 20seh. I bought it about a year ago and it hadn't been driven since about 2002. I had it delivered by a transporter driver who got it to start (using alot of easy start spray) so when it arrived it ran albeit a bit lumpy. I left it under a cover and haven't touched it until now and it won't turnover.
It has some sort of cheap aftermarket immobiliser which involves pushing a key thob card into a slot in the dash. Is there a way I can remove this system?

It all depends on how the installer fitted the immobiliser.
Trace the alarm wiring until it joins the body loom.
Chances are two wires will link to a blue / red wire on the body loom that has been cut.
Re-join the blue / red wires.
It would be highly unlikely that the original yellow alarm / immobiliser connector would have been used.
Check fuses 11 and 30.
11 is for the fuel injection system...
Fuse 30 is often used for after market alarms.
Trace the alarm wiring until it joins the body loom.
Chances are two wires will link to a blue / red wire on the body loom that has been cut.
Re-join the blue / red wires.

Cheers for that.
Checked both fuses and they're fine. There is an alarm system but I'm not sure it's connected to the immobiliser, there is a GM branded alarm crudely screwed to the battery tray that has 2 x 9v batteries in it, a GM box screwed to the body behind the battery and a GM switch coming through the dash in the spare space where the fog lamp switches are. I've dismantled the stuff in the engine bay, pulled the switch through the dash and traced all the wire back to the x6 connector in the passenger footwell. I want to take it out completely but don't know which wires to cut etc....

That sounds like a system 90 alarm.
The big box in the engine bay is the sounder, and the 9v batteries are for battery back-up for the alarm.
The switch on the dash is for turning off the ultrasonic sensors.
If it has a remote, it is a 902.
If it is controlled by turning on the ignition within 15 seconds of opening the door (no remote), then it is a 901.
In that case look for a black box on the shelf at the back of the glove box.
I have the pin out for that alarm.

Ok, I've felt behind the glove box and there doesn't seem to be anything there or in the glove box. The box in the engine bay has GM remote control system written on it but there's no key thob for it. When I first received the car it ran so is there a chance this alarm isn't connected anymore?
I'm not sure how to upload images on here otherwise I'd photograph the immobiliser to see if anyone's come across it before.

The only way to post pictures, is to host them off site using Flikr, Imger or postimages.
Photobucket is a total pain at the moment.
These hosting sites should provide substantial storage for free.
They should also tell you how to create links for websites and forums.

This is the immobiliser system. I'm guessing this is separate to the alarm as they don't seem to be linked
The immobiliser slot on the dash has 8 wires, 2 go to the cut wire at the back of the ignition barrel
2 go to a cut wire going to fuse 11
Then the last 4 are clustered together and soldered to one small wire that gets lost behind the instrument cluster
I'm thinking I can reconnect the cut wires with a crimp joint at the ignition barrel and behind fuse 11 but I have no idea what the last 4 wires clustered together do

If you tell me what colour the wires are, I may be able to make an educated guess.
But yes good sturdy crimps and insulation on all joints.

The cut wire behind the barrel is red/black
The cut wire to fuse 11 is red/blue
The wire going behind the instrument panel is plain black
There's a thin black wire that seems to have been cut here too but doesn't do anything

Hmm someone has been playing.
Black is 'usually' ignition live feed.
Red / Black is the feed from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid.
Blue / Red (or Red / Blue) is from the fuse (11) to the fuel pump, via the big connector in the passenger foot well.

I think I'll try crimping together the cut wire at fuse 11 and the cut wire behind the ignition barrel because those are the obvious ones and see what happens. The last one is a bit bizarre with 4 thin black wires going to one thin black wire. It's probably best for me to take the instrument cluster out to see where it actually goes.

Have you tried googling the immobiliser maker and model?
I often google immobilisers and alarms to assist people with wiring questions.

Immobiliser doesn't seem to have a maker on it just says 'the immobiliser' on the key and the window stickers. I trawled through google searches to find something similar and can't find anything. Would've helped if it had a more original name than 'the immobiliser'. I'll have a look through the paperwork on the off-chance there's a receipt or a booklet other than that it'll just be trial and error
