Fuel tank breather pipe
Just taken the car for it's MOT and they have told me that there is a problem with the tank breather pipe. Can anyone help me with the internal diameter of the breather pipe that is on a 1986 1800i Mk2 Cavalier. It's the one that goes to the filler neck apparently. They mentioned that it is routed through a plastic sleeve. Thanks for looking.

I will see what I can find out, when I get in later.
If I remember correctly, I think it is a normal rubber hose approx 4 to 6 mm bore. But it is 13 years since I last looked closely at a mk2, so please don't take me as correct, until I have had chance to check.

Just looked, and there are two pipes.
A thick one (33) and a thinner one.(34)
The thicker one is 11mm bore rubber hose.
The thinner one is 4.5mm bore rubber hose.
I presume it is the 4.5mm bore (i/d) hose that you are looking for.
If I remember correctly, I think it is a normal rubber hose approx 4 to 6 mm bore. But it is 13 years since I last looked closely at a mk2, so please don't take me as correct, until I have had chance to check.

Thanks Rob for the information. It is the 11mm pipe but there is a problem. The outer diameter is 13mm to 14mm as it goes through a tube heading up to the fuel filler. I think that I have found a possible source but, 1) they are closed until after the holiday and 2) they sell only 30m lengths! My local hydraulic specialists only stock pressure hose which has a greater o/d. I don't know if anyone can suggest a source. The car has only covered 8,200 miles and I guess that this is the original pipe. It is very brittle. In the four years that I have owned the car it has had less than 60 litres of fuel through it. Prior to my ownership it was last used in 1994. Ethanol damage at such a low throughput? Any thoughts welcomed.

Ethanol is a killer on the old rubber fuel pipes. Theoriginal hoses were made for petrol without ethanol, back in the 80s and 90s.
So with the new E5 / E10 fuels, your old hoses will be destroyed in no time.
You need to fit fuel hose capable of handling E10 fuel.
There are plans to increase the ethanol content of the current unleaded from 5% (E5) to 10% (E10).
I suggest systematicly changing every flexible fuel hose in the car for that reason.
I will be doing this on my 1983 van in due course.
So with the new E5 / E10 fuels, your old hoses will be destroyed in no time.
