Another non Vauxhall
Confession time...due to our flyballing and the need for more space this \/ will be joining us next week. Part of the vehicle shuffle will sadly involve parting with the Cavalier

Shame....
Tell you what though the Vw scene and the campers look smart with subtle mods, needs must and all that...

Free Parking is a bonus, leaving my Cav in a carbon dust filled carpark is not.....

Not my cuppa at all mate. Suppose it'll be useful for moving/storage.

Re: Another non Vauxhall
Following our first run out with it, a little tester before an upcoming trip to Derby I came back with a list! Got very hot in traffic on the a27, which we just cleared as I got a warning light. Fan fuse was blown, which after some investigation this morning was down to a seized fan motor. I have freed it off this morning. Also noted that the voltage regulator for the gauges is crap and they are all over the place so will strip that later too. I've also concluded that the timing is not right as it runs better with the cold start pulled out, which is basically a 4 degree timing advance. All fixable stuff. Windows are now tinted and the back is full of dog crates.

Tea, biscuits and cake are a hobby of mine just like Cavs. If others shared this hobby this world would be a better place.

With the tints, and a little extra weight added to the back, lol. Timing advanced a little by ear and it runs loads better but I need to lay my hands on a diesel pulse adapter for my timing light. Dog cages in the back, and they travel much better. Other bits still to tweak.

Re: Another non Vauxhall
Casually mentioned the benefits of turbocharging to the wife the other day and she agreed it was a good idea. I was stunned! Looked at what I need to source, started with the purchase of an exhaust manifold and charger from a volvo. Excitement now killed because we have started burning lots of oil, and I haven't fitted anything yet. Need to get the head off and see if I can figure out what is going on.

Re: Another non Vauxhall
A rare photo of me actually doing something on one of my own motors!
Bloody nightmare, took the head off and found a horror story caused by some muppet setting the cam timing so that the pistons 'tickle' the exhaust valves which it had been doing for months. Valve guides knackered, pistons bo**oxed, rings cooked..... Never bothered with looking any further but suspect the shells were probably suffering too.
Sourced a decent replacement, from an earlier version which turned out to have a different belt run. A series of knock on effects meant drilling and tapping the block, replacing the oil pump and entire belt run with all the ancillaries. The timing pump on the replacement also turned out to be crap so that had to be swapped too.
Far more money than intended later it's a runner again. The pile of turbo parts awaits, but will not be going on for a while as I have some medical issues to get through first.

Good work!
These engine look like a nightmare to work on, although i didnt realise the whole front came off like that which should make the job allot easier. I keep thinking about the manual conversion for mine but looks like a massive/expensive job.

The whole front comes off in about 10 minutes Dan, and it's a piece of pi** to get to everything except the stupid downpipe clips after that.

Actually, surprisingly none..... not counting the spare everything off the old engine. There isn't actually that much to remove if you take the engine and box out together.

I gave it a run out last night, pulls stronger, smoother and quieter. No leaks or dramas. Off to Catton Hall in Derbyshire with it tomorrow for the British Flyball championships
