You know how something can sit in the corner of the room/garage for so long that it becomes invisible? No? Oh, just me then. Anyway, a few years back I bought a four-spoke Irmscher steering wheel that has been collecting dust ever since. These items can sell for hundreds of pounds to eager Omega beavers, but I was fortunate enough to pick this one up on the ‘bay for less than thirty quid. I can’t remember which car I bought it for – maybe the V6 Cavalier as my Irmscher MV6 has the facelift aluminium-finish special edition steering wheel already in place – or perhaps I clocked the price and thought I’d worry about where to install at a later date? Either way, the days of it sitting idle are a thing of the past as I’ve decided to spruce up the cockpit of my Cavalier Turbo with some Irmscher joy!

The steering wheel had the fake wood finish when bought new (wood, aluminium and carbon-fibre were the options) and it looks like the previous owner has tried to remove the bulk of the pattern. He seems to have given up on that front, which is odd as he forked out for a tidy leather retrim on the rest of the outer wheel just before I rolled up.

The standard facelift Cavalier steering wheel is super ugly, so this should improve the interior without losing the airbag. I’ll need to pick up a mini-facelift Omega centre section before fitting, but in the meantime this Irmscher hoop has been shipped off to the bodyshop and I’ve asked for the non-leather bits to be colour coded in Satin Red. It will probably divide opinion when installed, but I think it should look pretty cool.

Collected the car from the bodyshop on Tuesday. The painted Irmscher steering wheel should brighten up the cabin!

The recent onslaught of bad weather resulted in the Cavalier being tucked up at Turbo Tom’s Autos for much longer than anticipated; unfortunately, the river Haven burst its banks causing devastation to homes and businesses in the town of Boston, Lincolnshire. Tom’s own unit was a few feet underwater, and the aftermath can be viewed in the following video (Tom can be seen recovering his Corsa van at around 20 secs):

Fortunately, my car was up on the ramps while the unit found itself three feet deep. The trusty Vauxhall remained dry, although I do need to treat the bonnet lining which shows signs of exposure to the damp atmosphere. Tom’s Corsa van didn’t fare quite so well and has had to have a new engine following significant water damage.

I think it’s safe to say that Boston has seen a trillion percent increase in the number of squeegees sold in recent weeks!

Anyway, work in the unit resumed following a number of visits from insurance assessors. To recap, my car was there for a rear bumper repair following its disagreement with the brick wall outside my house, replacement of the textured black plastic insert to the same bumper, paint on a brand new GM tow eye cover, new paint on both wing mirrors, paint to the formerly fake-wood finish of my Irmscher steering wheel, new paint on the rear boot panel, replace the nearside front ABS sensor and sort a few stone chips/light scratches. In other words, a good old fashioned tidy up.

Ok, perhaps that’s not an entirely accurate representation of my revitalised Cavalier(!), but it is looking nice and shiny thanks to the repaired rear bumper, new paint and the replacement black textured plastic at the rear:

Looking very shiney. That steering wheel will look much better even with just the airbag fitted. Cant wait to see it in the car.

Maybe paint a few other subtle bits red too but not too much like some people do!

Thanks Dan. As I posted the pics up I did think that I shoulda got the door card inserts painted to match. Doh. Perhaps I'll give 'em a go myself at some point.

You and me both! I was watching the news and images of Boston under four foot of flood water were in plentiful supply. The bodyshop is close to the river so I feared the worst. Thankfully, through luck rather than judgement, the car was up in the air that night. Phew!

Update #40 (otherwise known as ‘The Case of the Confusing Wing Mirrors’)...

I requested that the colour coded parts of both wing mirror plastics were painted while the car was at the bodyshop. Typically, the driver’s side cover had a hairline crack in it, so I decided to send a replacement to use instead of attempting to fix the broken part. The donor item was removed from one of my other cars, but Tom reported that he had difficulty in getting it to sit properly on the original mirror housing. The problem seems to be that the cracked cover was OEM, whereas the donor cover was an aftermarket part. Further inspection revealed a completely different design between locating points on mirror covers and, to my surprise, the mirror mounts themselves. Both are heated/motorised, but with very different internals. Needless to say, I raided the parts bin in an effort to get each side to sit without fault. What should have been a simple swap soon became a drawn out process involving three offside mirrors!

Before (the passenger side mirror casing was also causing problems):

Image

During (different mirror internals, different locating points and case shapes. Time to mix and match! The third mirror kindly donated its glass and backing panel):

Image

Image

Image

Image

Locating points on a spare OE case I had lying around:

Image

I managed to crack the nearside interior mirror panel during removal. Fortunately, I had a replacement ready and waiting. Even so, it was still pretty annoying:

Image

After (the rubber seal is absent in this pic but was applied before reattaching the mirror to the car):

Image

Image

That was a thoroughly boring update. Suffice to say, the freshly painted mirrors are now in place and sat as they should be. Bravo etc.

The car was back home, taxed and ready for action. It seemed like a good time to get rid of the rough ol’ wheels that it wears during the winter months and return the powdercoated rims to their rightful home. Swapping the wheels also provided an opportunity for a timely inspection of each corner. Looks fine to me!

Image

The inside of each wheel was washed, polished and waxed before repatriation:

Image

And back where they belong (minus air, centre caps and a clean face!). Engine crane threatening more involved work in the not-too-distant future:

Image

First oil change of the year. The magnetic sump plug seems to be doing a good job:

Image

Image

All cleaned up and ready to be screwed back in:

Image

Image

With the wing mirrors, wheels and rubber back in place (not to mention a sump full of fresh GM 10w40), it was almost time to meet up with NickSRi at Rockingham Motor Speedway where we would be flying the flag for the Mk3 Cavalier at the Retro Cars catch up and track session. All that was left for me to do was to undertake a thorough detailing of the car so that she was ready for her close up (the event will be featured in forthcoming issue of the mag).

A long day spent washing, polishing and waxing every inch of the car followed, although you can hardly tell from the following picture as I was running out of daylight by the time that I remembered to get snapping. I’ve got some photos from the event itself to post up shortly, although it was touch and go regarding my attendance; in spite of my efforts to detail the car, the battery refused to kick in when it was time to drive back into the garage! I temporarily robbed the Saab of its juicebox and put the Cavalier’s on an overnight charge. I think the battery is on its way out tbh, which is a bit of a pain as the MV6 is demanding a new battery too. Yay, more expense! Bah.

Image

Despite the Saab’s best intentions, this failed to help matters:

Image

And a sneak peek from the following day at Rockingham. More to follow...
