I've still to get the bulkhead + floorpan investigated to see if there is a problem with moisture ingress and rust. >> Logistical problems getting to and from the man near Sedgefield who can do this. Then there are the little blisters around the sunroof to take care of (repaint the roof no doubt). After which photo-ops in Hebburn!!

Aha! I just spotted this on Facebook: a photo diary (92 pictures) of the work on your SRi! Wow, that was a fair amount of rot. Looking at the petrol filler opening, I can see why you opted for new rear quarters.
Yup, side mouldings are in place so it looks like an SRi. The top edges have however not bonded perfectly in all places so I should really get some kind of (transparent) sealer to run along the top and prevent long term water retention. Any suggestions?
Big headache is to decide where exactly to position the replacement front SRi decals which are not quite standard but to me look better.
Good thing I'm not on Facebook, there are some things that are better forgotten. Compared with that the pimples near the sunroof should be small fry if I can catch them early enough.
Does my personal ego a power of good driving around in it now!

Until Troy does, the roof is going to be a welding job for Michael Bonello's in Stepney Bank Newcastle for all those that know the area, followed by St Michaels Coachworks in Byker to do the paintwork. They work in tandem apparently. I'm miffed at having to go to this expense so soon after getting Turbo Tom to include the roof in his project. I might get him to look at the floorpan interior / footwell / bulkhead at the same time.

Next time I'll borrow your crystal ball .. But after we had eliminated re-shelling, it would have been one hellava project all at one go and I'd have had doubts about where to draw the line. And again, logistically and organisationally, who could I have gone to to do the job? And I've a feeling that even when a "full resto" was completed that would never be the end of the story. At least this way I have been able to phase the work and decide on what to do and what not (can't think of any of the latter off hand). Makes it seem more satisfying and less expensive, like payday loans ...

It wasn't a pop - just an observation. I'm in a similar boat, so deep into it, its not worth considering backing out and reshelling.
I didn't realise reshelling was eliminated though

Car is with these people now. Seems that there's not much to worry about with the footwell / bulkhead but quite a bit to do around the sunroof - there's a spongy bit which apparently can act as a moisture trap and it's not easy to get access to the rust without taking the sunroof frame off which might then knacker the roof ....! He thinks that it's doable but I think I've been living in a bit of a fool's paradise as far as the roof is concerned (I haven't read much about rusty roofs in the posts). Hopefully sorting this out might help the condensation problem that set this whole train of thought off months ago

It started off with a number of rust pimples appearing around the sunroof (front and rear corners) even though this had been re-done at the time of the replacing the rear quarter panels and sills. I thought these were superficial but as often happens when you start digging, more was revealed ... Apparently there is as I said a design weakness moisture trap at the back of the sunroof which is no doubt made worse if the drainage channels are not 100%. So, going by the bill, quite a bit of Troy-ing was required to put things in order. It looks fine now (as I'd expect!) and I have Michael Bonello's word that he's got all the drain channels sorted out (using compressed air and water and various other wheezes that these guys have in their box of tricks).
He's going to send me some pics which I'd like to post up.
