Genuine period Cavalier tyre - 185/70R13 CINTURATO CN36

Post by Dougal Cawley »

Hi team

The CN36 came out in 1969 and for some time was the low profile tyre of choice for sports cars.

Pirelli have just produced a 13" version perfect for you chaps http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/page/18 ... -cn36.html

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

However, only very few MK3 Cavaliers were fitted with 13 inch wheels and they were 165/80/13.

Most cavaliers were fitted with 14 or 15 inch wheels with 195/60/14 and 175/70/14 being the most common.

These tyres are the right size for MK1 Cavaliers only.

My Dunlop fitment guides that go through til 83 recommend 165/80R13 or 185/70R13 However they do list the SRi as having 195/60R14 in 1983

However back in the '90s i was a big Cortina fan (i'm into older cars these days) and the Cortina like the Cavalier fitted 165R13 as standard, but the Ghia and Crusader models fitted 185/70R13, as a result, the more standard models ended up with the Ghia Alloy wheels and the bigger tyres. And on top of that 185/70R13 tyres just became more comon place aand as a result the price was good, because everyone was fitting low profile tyres.

However the scores on the doors at present is that you can buy modern 165/80R13 tyres that are cheap, will work and they are OK. or you can buy genuine period tyres from Michelin http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/page/16 ... as-ff.html . and lets not kid ourselves they are a chunk of money, but they are brilliant. I fitted those on my Cortina when i had a ZeTech engine in it and it was brilliant. (i took the bigger 185/70R13 tyres off and went smaller because it was more fun).

And now for the first time you can buy a genuine period tyre in the size 185/70VR13 http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/page/18 ... -cn36.html and the price is really good. They aren't for nothing, and most people don't care, but the fact that the choice is there is a good thing.

Oo and they look cool

I don't want to be argumentative, but this is not a Ford forum.
It is a Cavalier forum specialising in model years 1988 to 1995.

From memory, very few very early Mk3's came with 13" rims.
The standard steelies are 14"
Most alloys are 15".

Do you have relevant information for our sizes of tyres?

James has mentioned this already above, but you continue to ignore his advice.

Indeed, this is a MK3 specific site.
Although I'll admit there are a few members on here who own mark ones and twos.

165/80R13 Is a MK3 size but only very early carb 1.4, 1.6 petrol and 1.7 (non turbo) diesel 'Standard' and 'L' spec cars.
Basically this is relevant but there aren't many on here who have those early models.

The most common sizes are:
175/70r14
195/60r14
195/60r15

Plus 205/55r15 which was exclusive to the GSI (including 4x4 version)
and 205/50r16 which was exclusive to the Turbo.

I'd say out of those 195/60r14 are the ones we are most in need of as there are very few manufacturers who still produce this size. Especially quality brands.
