Carbon/charcoal canister

Post by Skara »

Is anyone familiar enough with this canister to tell me if I can plug any holes on throttle body that leads from this canister I'm very positive the purge valve is in fault and that could be why the engine is running rich at the times (C16NZ) ?

If it is the same as the C16NZ2 / C18NZ,
there should be a blue plastic pipe that goes from the right inner wing to a "flying saucer" in the middle of the bulk head, and then forward towards the throttle body.
You could try plugging the blue pipe to see if this lowers the emissions.

I tried plugging the one that goes on a one-way valve on a brake servo hose that connects to the intake manifold and the car appears to be runing better, without a missfire that is I'll see on the long run if that is it. And about that ''flying saucer'', am I correc in thinking that is purge valve ?

It is a vacuum controlled valve that allows gasses stored in the carbon canister to be sucked into the induction air stream when the engine is running.

When the engine is off, the valve is closed and the fuel tank gasses are held in the carbon canister.

If you have blocked the servo vacuum pipe, be careful that you still have servo assistance to the brakes.
It may be the servo vacuum pipe has a leak or a crack in it.
So look for damaged pipes or loose connections.

Interesting this topic I'm thinking my carbon canister is saturated, I'd read this can be an issue with high HC. I was looking at trying to find a replacement, but will try blocking the blue pipe first.

Indeed,
I have thought on the odd occasion that I can smell fuel.
It is usually on a hot day, so I was wondering if the hose from the tank to carbon canister is perished.

But I have no idea where this pipe is...
Even though I know where the canister is.

The canister is shown here behind the right hand wheel arch.
Attached to the inner wing.

Image

Access is said to be achieved by removing the arch liner.
Although here it is clearly visible and accessible with the wing removed. :P

The little blue vac type pipe is the one that feeds gases back to engine, so was thinking taking that off and blocking the input.

Certainly makes sense that this could cause issues. Especially being 20+ years old.

That is the whole point of the blue pipe.
To draw off excess gasses.
Unless the cannister is now "full" like an old filter...
In which case the correct idea would be to fit a new clean canister.

For information.
On a facelift C18NZ part number 90 234 323
Price is £66.16 at genuinepartsearch (GPS / Autovaux).

For C20NE / C20XE part number is 90 234 324

Part number not listed at GPS and therefore no price.

I have a C20NE engine linked upto my original / factory fitted C18NZ specification fuel evaporation carbon canister via the blue vacuum pipe and flying saucer.
I wonder if that affects my emissions?

The C20NE / C20XE canister does not appear to have a vacuum stub fitted to it.
The C18NZ / C16NZ / C16NZ2 do have a vacuum stub on the canister.

Definitely a strange one with those canisters, none of them in the parts diagram look like any one I've seen, at least on the top section.

https://opel.7zap.com/en/car/j89/g/0/28-0/

I wonder if at some point they ran out of those ones and used ones from a different model, can't see it somehow, they'd have put a temporary different part number for them you'd think.

Once I get back to my garage I'll be having a look at the one on the dilplomat, as it's stripped off at the moment, so will be able to guage if it's the same one as in your pic above, as I'm sure that's the same one I have on my LS.

I'd look at the canister on my diplomat and it is the sameas the one you posted above, flat top with 3 pipes, one in the middle, and one on each side but the part number is 90352391 which points to no 3 on this diagram, which looks totally different.

https://opel.7zap.com/en/car/j89/g/0/28-0/#3

Atleast that solves the issue somewhat that the diagrams used in the parts slide are not what you would find under the wing. Although I've seen ones online that look like the one in the diagram, with 2 pipes in the middle on a sort of stalk, and one pipe at the side.

Sadly - they are the same images on EPC3.
