Free Cavalier SRi in France

Post by James McGrath »

Hello everyone,

I was recently contacted by a gentleman in France called Lindsay Phillips who has recently been given the task of selling off a friend's estate who sadly died last year.

Anyway, he has a 1991 Vauxhall Cavalier SRi that now has no owner.
Basically he's offering it for free for anyone who wants to collect it.

The car is located in Lorgues in southern France.
Anyone who is interested, please contact Lindsey on: winephil@aol.com

A good project for Red Arrow perhaps??

He wanted an early SRi, so this might just be the ticket.
And a good project to rejuvenate the old girl.

Although a little neglected, it does not look too bad from here.

Give him an email.
He seems confident that it could be driven away.

Are we allowed to travel to France yet? I'm a bit confused with the rules at the moment. I live about a mile from the Welsh border and in there you're not even allowed to go over 5 miles.

I presume you must be allowed to go abroad from England.
I live under the flight path for Manchester airport, and I see about 10 Ryanair flights per day. (Rome, Tenerife, Ibiza etc).

But Wales is a lot stricter than England.
We cannot venture into Wales from England unless we are a key worker.

As for France, I don't know.

Hi guys, yes this would of been perfect for me if it had been over here. The interior is spot on the same as my dads old one too, totally gutted I can’t have it. Unfortunately I just don’t have the time or resources to get over and collect it.
I have a young family and in the process of moving house too so things are a bit hectic at the moment. If it by any chance ends up back over here and then for sale then I would definitely go take a look.

I wonder if you could get it trailered most of the way.

I am sure it would not be as expensive as paying for an ebay special.

Just a thought.

So been in contact with the guy who seems genuine, he even sent me a photo of the original V5. Looks like he has about a week before the buyers of the house/land that the cavalier is parked on move in and will want it moving. Looks like he has got the potential to get it moved to his house if someone is genuinely interested. If not I think the scrap man will take it unfortunately.
It’s now out of my hands as my wife says it’s just too risky for a car I haven’t even seen to pay a few hundred pounds to get it back over here. If someone else has the resources/spare time and the balls to do it then fair play.
As I say, I have no doubt this is genuine but I also can’t be 100% sure either so a risk I can’t afford to take with a young family to support.
Will be a real shame if it gets scrapped but hopefully something else will come up for sale in this country one day I hope.

I understand your wife's concern, but any car that is 25 or more years old is a huge risk.

So in reality, any Cavalier has the potential to be a bottomless money pit.

That's excellent news.
I have no doubt that the interest that this car has generated has helped change his mind.

I am sure James and Lizzie need a trip to France...
To soak up some French history and wine.

Yes I think that’s true James, I’ve basically been saying to him that these cars are so rare over here and that they are starting to really go up in value. Even though i’m not in a position to buy this one due to the location, I still hated the thought of it being scrapped so sent him some positive information and the reasons of why it should be saved if he can afford to do it. So luckily he is now in the process of getting the car moved today before it’s too late.

We gave it some serious thought.
Worked out that it would cost about £500 in total to retrieve it.
Then the LS failed it's MOT and I remembered what a pain in the arse 6 of them are already!

That's brilliant, well done!
