My car is that fast i managed to lose the front passenger indicator unit on the m62 before. Had nothing to do with the stupidly high winds thats were battering warrington!

Its now all wonky having a facelift indicator in the hole rather than a preface like it should.

You do know that chris has just bought a 260bhp scooby for £900 and he said i could borrow it just to beat you?

Right, to kind of continue from the "While my car gently weeps" thread in the lounge and to update the WIP, as I like doing, with each issue I encounter and sort out. Recently I had discussed an issue I've been having with the tracking and associated tyre wear resulting in two new front tyres and the discovery that, when changing the wishbones both the sleeves supplied must be used on the rear bush bolt fitting otherwise, the result is ovaling of the subframe bolt hole.
Bugger...
So the garage I like using fixed the issue with two chunky washers welded in place on both sides and the result was a massive handling improvement. However the knocking I'd associated with the wishbone issue wasn't a wishbone issue but a steering rack bushes issue.

So home I head, enjoying the handling improvement as anyone would. Less than a 1/4 mile from home we notice steam coming from under the bonnet and now I notice the temperature gauge is off the scale. Please note, I'm usually very careful about this but I clean forgot this time, and I'm paying for it. I popped the header tank lid and stood back as the resulting cappuccino volcano covered the engine bay in brown goo.
Bugger...

Now flip forward a few days to today... (insert wavy scene change and "do doo do doo" music score)

I've decide I've cooked the engine, blown a/both head gaskets and contaminated both oil and water systems, at the very least, and at worse, I've done the above and warped the heads, not to mention the pin prick hole in the radiator which is the cause of all this, that I found today. Not a difficult leapt of faith, really...

The other 4 images are shots taken during the strip down, needless to say the heads are ready to come off and be skimmed (£57.50 total inc VAT at a local place reputed to be very good and also pressure tests the results) and new gaskets have been bought and are ready to be fitted (£44ish) then the plan is to have the radiator fixed, flush the coolant system with some specialist fluid and run some cheap oil with some Wynn's or better then to replace the fluids.

It all ways the same one little problem leads to a bigger one. You will soon have it fixed by the sounds of it.

good price on the skim. use forte biodegreaser on the innards, its amazing stuff. and whats your oil cooler like after this episode? also, get the elring gaskets, theyre the OE supplier

well I've only taken the front head off today (owning to breaking several tools on a headbolt , replaced with teng ) and all the oil ways all look clear, however judgement to be witheld until tomorrow when I take the other head off... got a picture of the state of play with the head off.

This looks a bit messy, but I said I'd tidy it up to keep the bill down...


Finally proof that v6+F28+CC= really good mpg as this is cruising at 70mph up the M62... Nice

I just went out and undid all the other head bolts so the other side is ready to come off tomorrow morning

well the heads are back and the rads out atm... so soon she will be back together and I can begin flushing her and replacing fluids.
Quick report; Excel engine specialists are definitely going in the recommended section as £60 for a 4 thou skim and a quick wash on 2 heads is really good value and the guys there are a pretty friendly bunch of chaps. As well as A1 radiator repairs... all in all a good day

Oil in the water on v6 usually mean the Oil cooler is rusted and is leaking, the head gaskets rairly fail. Worth taking you oil cooler out and checking. Replace with a late v6, as early cav ones are a crap design and prone to rusting.

I'll check that but I did find a area that had blown throu.. I have a spare 3 litre cooler

there's a handy guide to part numbers and bits you'll need when replacing the oil cooler in the how2 section...

don't know if access is a problem but for undoing the oil union nuts in the bowels of the engine you'll probably need a 19mm crows foot spanner.

Nah it's fairly easy with the heads off... but seems fine. With respect to this I'm almost 100% sure of the situation... a hole has been located at the bottom on the front facing side of the radiator and discolouration on the heads connecting the oilway and waterway indicate that the car has lost most of the coolant then overheated causing the reduced pressure in one system and higher pressure in the other is the reason, so I whip off the header cap and the pressure released sprays the resulting mix out in a Pompay effect. But most of the oil seems clear of contamination so I think put her back together and a flush of both systems...

Did a lot of cleaning of grime and fitted the new belt... almost
currently deciding on whether to use the polished manifold I got from Dave or crinkle black an old one...
