I wouldn't wanna risk it. Unless I can find a mechanic with a locking kit, I'm buying my own.

Replaced the reverse light switch today.

Old switch.

New switch.

Was a sod to get to, with the ABS unit and the clutch cable in the way, couldn't get to it at first but ended up butchering the plug on the old switch and hammering a deep socket onto it, and got it out that way. Stuck the new one in and I have functioning reverse lights.

Good job.

Ask around some of your local garages to see if they have the locking tool for the v6, then book it in for a belt and pump - if you can't find any local, the guys near me have one and did my belt. There is faff all space to get your hands in and as buying the tool costs more than a garage replacing the belt, its a no brainer in my opinion.

I'm gonna service it first, before I do the belt, as I think the sump bolt washer is leaking by itself. So need to drop the oil either way. New oil, plugs and filter, and see what needs doing to the front hub area. Then go from there.

You gotta jack it up, remove the wheel, then loads of room! You can always hire the locking kit rather than buy one. Even with the latter you don't need to buy new.

It's the alternator belt tensioner that winds me up, overhanging the cover. Vectra is worse though, less room.

Cheers Gary. It is a pretty solid Cavalier, I shall hopefully be servicing it next week, weather permitting, once I have all the necessary bits.

P.S. can anyone tell me or show me info regarding fluid specifications, i.e. engine oil capacity, coolant capacity, etc for the V6? Saves me having to trawl around for a Haynes manual for an Omega or whatever it was.

Thanks.

Quick call to the local refinery should do it mate, if they bring a tanker you may just get it to the minimum line...

Get a Haynes for the Omega Andrei, there are a million on eBay and outline all the correct torque values and capacities etc.

Be aware with coolant levels as only half will come out when you drain it, it needs a flush through to remove everything in the block. Does your car have air con? 9 litre coolant capacity iirc but will check when I'm in the garage next. For now I have the cup final to watch!

Cheers.

Gave up today, attempted to change the cam cover gaskets, couldn't get the inlet out of the way, as there are shit loads of hoses and pipes that lead to it and if I took them all off I'd guarantee that I forget where everything goes back. Nowhere near as simple as I thought it would be, so going to leave it until I can get some help with it. So frustrating as I was hoping to get it all done today...... :wall

Check my guide. you can move the upper inlet manifold to one side still connected to the hoses, it's actually the easiest job the V6 engine (I don't know if that's a good or bad thing?!)

Having to do everything twice is a pain on these engines but they are rewarding once you work your way around them :)

I had the laptop in the car, following the guide step by step, there are many more hoses and pipes that weren't on the guide, hence I got lost. Like the 2 hoses that run over the second bank, next to the cambelt cover, joined to metal unions. No idea what they are for so I didn't want to disturb them. Also the brake servo vacuum hose was preventing the inlet from moving too far, I rang up Dave and he said best leave that one be. I'll go out again in a minute and see if I can get anything else done, but it literally was a struggle to get past the inlet problem. I've taken the first cam cover off and cleaned it up, so may try replacing the gaskets on that.

Right, well, managed to clean up some more oil, place a pair of gaskets on the first cam cover and replace 3 plugs at the front.

Haven't sealed it down yet, going to get some gloves so I can apply the sealing compound properly at some point. Working for the next 4 days so that's more time gone down the drain....

Sounds a mare of a job buddy but thats the V6 for you....

Lucky I didn't need to disturb you in the end as my boss followed me to Pikestone in his Jag, then moaned when we found russ had gone off to collect his boy from school...lol

Catch up next week at some point dude and if you need an extra pair of hands gimme a shout.

I know it's easy when you know how, but the cam cover gaskets shouldn't cause you a massive headache, it's pretty straightforward. There are breather hoses connected to the inlet to move around and about but nothing much more than that, although it's down to you to remember what you've unplugged and where haha!

Incidentally, if you decide you ARE gonna get the timing belt done any time soon then that would be the perfect time to introduce X30XE camshafts... ;)

Ye it's not a bad idea, the sticky labels. Then just write corresponding numbers on them. Trouble is it's so sticky under there anyway, oil here and there nothing will stick unless I clean everything up first.

X30 cams... don't tempt me...
