Jury service
Well here I am trying to waste time before being called into court and I'm not allowed to talk about the trial I'm on.
Anyone here ever been called up for jury service? There seems to be allot of waiting around involved.

Yep done it twice, lots of waiting especially if you don't get a case straight away & judges seem to work part time 10:00 to 4:00, perhaps there is lots going on in the background that you don't see.

Re: Jury service
Well I've been given a case. I was in the first set of names to be called luckily.
I've got a little bit of time before I need to be back at court so I've been enjoying some of the great views Lewes has to offer:

I've been called twice but on both occasions managed to get out of it.

Re: Jury service
Do they pay you to do it? I wonder how the self-employed are compensated for loss of earnings?

Re: Jury service
Yeah they pay you.
It's a standard flat rate for any days that you would otherwise have been working plus travel expenses and a modest amount for food and drink.

Re: Jury service
I did it nearly 30 years ago when I was an apprentice. With the paid expenses I was better off there than at work, and doing shorter days too, so got friendly with the jury officer chap and managed to do an extra week. He did his best to put me on the most drawn out case he could but alas it had to end eventually. Got my first speeding ticket on the way home one night, which I could have got off with his help too had it been in the morning on the way in!

If you work for a small business or are self employed you can write to them stating financial hardship etc and they'll let you off. They also let my wife off when she was at home looking after at the time our one year old child.

I was called up to do it a 4 or 5 years ago. I phoned them up and said ill do it but you will need to pay for a flight to get there and back. As I was working up in Shetland at the time. The bloke at the other end of the phone said forget about it ill put you down as unavailable. Made me happy .

Re: Jury service
I'm back at Lewes crown court again.
First week went smoothly, the trial I was on was over by Wednesday.
The second week hasn't started so smoothly. Been waiting for four hours and haven't been called up yet. Hopefully I'll get one soon. I don't particularly like the idea of waiting until later on in the week to be picked and having that last into a third week.

If you don't get a short case by tomorrow or Thursday they'll probably discharge you.
