Snow!!!!!!!

Post by Greig Sri »

Rant time, I getting p1$$ed off with the snow. It started 2 weeks ago with not too much falling, but after a few days it had turned in to about 1inch of ice. Which is still on the ground, never got warm enuff to melt it. Now over the last couple of days its been snowing off and on.

Here what it looks like out side my house this morning.
Some fokes cars are realy strugling to get up the road in this pic. My super Astra can do it no problem.

Someware in this pic is a Cav hiding under a few inches of snow.

Since I took the pics the snow has not stoped so now a bit more than in the pics. As the Astra is covered again.

I just want the snow gone!!!!! :wall

I like to look at too, but after a day I get fed up of it. Like you say its not good for getting about in. When I was out one night last week. I had my dress shoes on with no grip on the sloes. I stepped off the pavement to walk round the taxi to get in. I went down on my arse in front of everyone waiting to get there taxis home. Probley about 100ish foke in the high street at the time. I was well 'oiled' at the time.

Did you lot have any last week then? Maybe either we had your snow last week and now you have ours or you now have a new lot of snow that is on its way down to us! :D

Everybody's lucky here really. I'm down SouthWest, which basically means nothing. Last year we had about a inch, thats it for 5 years. Now we'll probably have to wait another 5 years for another bit.
back where i came from, Ulyanovsk, Russia, last week it was -37 according to my grandparents who still live there. When i were a kid, i used to walk outside and fall through the snow like a trap door. Nothin here, absolutely nothing.
I know what people mean about the bad effects of driving in it, but if i'm gonna have snow, i might as well have it proper.
Andrei.

plenty of snow on and off for the past fortnight. loads again last night but it never stood a chance as it had been raining for so long that it never settled. the frost tonight is mental though, all that rain has left a film of black ice everywhere...

My gripe about the season is people driving on days like today where the sun is out, no snow or ice on the roads (except in shaded areas, but not where I was driving) and driving at 1/2 the legal limit!

Seriously, no word of a lie, some idiot driving at 15 miles an hour on clear ice free roads! These people should stay at home... oh and they were in a landie...

Yes I drive on snow at the legal limit where possible and I'm not against use of the handbrake if the car understeers (just a quickie I don't drive like I'm on a track, the year I passed my test we had a really bad winter and I was treated to snow driving lessons by me dad), that and I understand why people may want to be a little more cautiious, but there are limits where caution becomes a bloody nusiance.

Rant over...

Do you feel a bit better for getting that off your chest?

Good, my turn then :D

Bloody numpties on the road that stop.... yes stop because they feel scared.. why not pull the feck over instead of having the que of traffic (that they caused I might add) trying to re-arrange the back end of my cav..

I do thanks... I know what you mean thou, I had someone stop at the end of a slip road today... why?

I fact I know why, it's because none of our current driving tuition covers snow driving so for most people the loss of grip is a nightmare confronted for the first time this winter. Solution; hire a skidpan for a few hours and get some training in controlling a skid/slide.

I mean how hard is it too teach people to avoid heavy braking in snow and ice and instead rely more on gear slowing, and to back off power gently when driving over patches of ice and snow.

In fact, 5 words suffice for an uncontrollable slide in snow; aim for the biggest snowdrift.

Personally, I nearly papped myself the other day, tapped the brakes and the back end flicked out and just missed my wall by inches - so I went to asda and had a play while it was quiet ;)

this is it... people view that with distain but it should be encouraged, as long as people and property aren't at risk. In fairness it's a similar situation to how I was shown.
Surprisingly racing lines also help, by that I mean imagine the racing line and drive it at normal speeds... effectively smoothing all the corners and driving much more fluidly, keeping the car balanced and settled and much more controllable.

it doesnt help that i have mismatched shocks currently (due to breaking a wheel bearing in a front shock and needing the car back on the road the same day).

I'm loving this weather! Truly loving it!
Seen some amazingly bad driving though...
People seem to think the answer to not getting up a hill the first time is to floor it, which results in the front of the car sliding left and right and never getting anywhere...

I've never had a problem getting round in the snow, even with 2WD, probably because I practised hand-braking and controlling slides on car parks in my younger days.

The Cav Turbo is probably most ridiculous car for getting about in the snow with though. The brakes are useless, the back just locks up immediately and get into more than 3PSI of boost, all 4 light up. Make for some tasty drifting though! :cool
