Could be something as simple as a HT lead not fitted on correctly. Then it might be needing new plugs or dist cap and rotar arm.

Is the EML on when it is playing up?

Try wiggleing/cleaning all the earth leads in the engine bay, both ends.Had this on mine after putting throttle bodies on it,I changed leads for K1 10MM racing leads, no joy.Put in new 4electrode bosch plugs, no joy.Swapped air flow meter, no joy. Swapped distributor cap and rotor, no joy.Changed fuel pump and flow regulator, no joy.
By now I was well up into the annoyance tree,so opened the bonnet and gave it my best possible evil stare, no joy.!
So wiggled a couple of leads at the head and the set at the body by the batteryand guess what ????? No joy !!!!! So in desperation pushed the cover, that funny thing joining both posts of the coil end back on, and hey presto the misfire has completely gone once the throttle bodies have cleared there throats after initial start up, doesn't come back till being stood over night, then goes once cleared up after a few seconds. :wave

I would suggest in this order: -

1) HT leads
2) Check Coil connection...I've had corrosion in coil connection where the lead goes in.
3) Plugs...check for soot on originals.
4) Engine temp sensor (For ECU, not for temp gauge)
then rotor dizzy etc...

Engine temp sensor (on my 1.8 CFi) is at the back of the rocker cover / cam housing at the cambelt end. The highest plug on this corner of the engine.
It has a blue rectangular end on it...there is a plug plugged into this with a metal wire which you squeeze towards the plug, then you can pull the plug off.

To check this is the correct part..
If it has been disconnected,
Briefly try to start the engine...it shouldn't start though..
turn off
- using the paperclip test a fault code of 15 will come on the dash.

A replacement is approx £7... even from Vx it should be quite cheap.

you mean running on 3 cylinders till warmed up then all 4 run?
does it do it at tick over when cold?
what does your engine tick over at when warmed up?
