engine spluttering, ecu?
engine spluttering, ecu?
as some may know i swapped a c16nz2 for ac18nz engine everything as the 1.8 except the ecu.
it starts fine but runs spluttery with the 1.6 ecu but when i fit the 1.8 one dash light flashes and does not even turn over. is there something else to do or is it unrelated to ecu?
the wiring loom seem identical to me.

Re: engine spluttering, ecu?
Did the engine come from a cav with an imobilisor?
Re: engine spluttering, ecu?

my 1.6 shell has a alarm sensory button on dash thing

Re: engine spluttering, ecu?
Hmmm, if the 1.8 had the transponder round the ignition barrel that'll be why it didn't fire up.daimo wrote:it definately had an alarm but there were no obvierce signs of a imobiliser

However, did you use the 1.6 loom or the 1.8 loom with the ECU?
Re: engine spluttering, ecu?
at the moment 1.6 wiring with 1.6 ecu
both engine looms looked identical but could be wrong, and ecus are different.
i will have to finely check wires at ecu plug end.

Re: engine spluttering, ecu?
I'd be checking the wiring loom for the immobiliser pin.daimo wrote:at the moment 1.6 wiring with 1.6 ecu

I should have thought to mention about imbolisers.

Re: engine spluttering, ecu?
Sounds to me like the loom needs to be replaced with the 1800 loom, as this will / should match all the , ecu pins and all the ignition side of things.
What number or Alpha Code is on the 1800 ECU
Here is the EPC listing for ECU's

Secondary thought - if it is an immobilzer light on the dash, then I assume, that the immobilizer is only matched to the 1600 ECU... hence your non-start with the 1800 ECU.
With the 1800 loom and ECU, this should bypass the immobilzer circuit.

Re: engine spluttering, ecu?
numbers on the ecus are different so i will be getting 1.8 loom out and closely checking and no doubt changing.
it was just the management light flashing
thanks for the help

Re: engine spluttering, ecu?
Have you tried doing the flash codes on the dash.
There is a how 2 on the forum or on Topp Buzz

Re: engine spluttering, ecu?
was going to but thourght the above would be the one to try.
but tomorrow i will try fault codes and see first . many thanks
i will get there slowly but surely.

Re: engine spluttering, ecu?
flashing eml - transponder type immobiliser problem, would suspect the guys are right in the suggestions given. I do know from experience that you can fit a non immobiliser ecu in place of the later one and it'll run.

Re: engine spluttering, ecu?
fault code shown up with 1.8 ecu as 85 immobiliser wrong signal, so any ideas as was what i can do?

Re: engine spluttering, ecu?
Sounds like it's a late ecu. If it came from a '95 MY or later then it'll be looking for the immobiliser signal, which from what you have said above it's probably not going to find. 99% certain the rest of the system is the same, so you just need the earlier ecu, Robsey's ecu list may help. Chassis no.s starting 89 or 87 (hatch and saloon) followed by S are '95, an R is '94 and anything before R will be earlier

Re: engine spluttering, ecu?
the car was scrapped and only have the key
Re: engine spluttering, ecu?
looking at documents it is the late ecu, so i presume i would be best to source a early ecu without immobiliser.
i surpose i saved everything except the immobiliser bit?

Re: engine spluttering, ecu?
its a pickup im not sure its actually coded to the chip and ecu, might be worth a go if you cant find an early ecu.

Re: engine spluttering, ecu?
As Gaz suggests the pickup or ring is programmed to talk with ecu, and to recognise keys, easier option to source earlier ecu. If you add the pickup/transponder keys to what you already have you'll need the security code for it and need it plugged into tech 1 to programme so that the ecu will play nice with it.Gaz wrote:its a pickup im not sure its actually coded to the chip and ecu, might be worth a go if you cant find an early ecu.

Re: engine spluttering, ecu?
i have the black box ring around ignition, is that what i need. thanks

Re: engine spluttering, ecu?
Yes, the control unit is part of that ring. You also need a transponder from a key that it recognises, if you don't have one you'll need the 4 digit security code for the immobiliser ecu in order to program it. I have a feeling that the immobiliser ecu and/or the engine ecu need to be programmed to recognise each other too, but I may be wrong, it's a few years since I played with one of these.daimo wrote:i have the black box ring around ignition, is that what i need. thanks

Re: engine spluttering, ecu?
i have got keys now and where would theimmobiliser ecu be
Re: engine spluttering, ecu?
its in the normal ecu, just plug the ecu in with the chip reader and get the chip out of the key and tape it to the flat bit of the reader and try it all again.
Re: engine spluttering, ecu?
i held the 1.8 key to the box and fitted 1.8 ecu and ried but was trying to start but not quite but then returned to what used to start but wouldnt now battery flat. when trying with key on box it stopped dash light flashing so it must work just being awkward
