notchy gears

Post by leigh l »

Hi, my gsi 2000 seems to have notchy gears, its even harder to get it into gear on hard acceleration. I have looked under the bonnet and there is a thing that moves when you change gear on top of the gearbox (not sure what its called) well it seems wet under neath that so was wondering if that could be the cause of the notchy gears, it doesnt crunch just seems stiff. Any advice would be most welcome.

Thanks

Check the clutch cable probably on its away out. The thing on the top is clutch release arm in which said cable is connected to.
The c20xe is a leaky engine so being wet underneath is standard

Check clutch adjustment and gear linkage adjustment, both have been covered on the forum elsewhere. Don't have time right now to find them and post a link, but someone will I expect.
A little dampness under the selector turret is no problem, if it is soaked then a new gasket and seal would be good.

Is it normal to have slight play in the clutch release arm? Could this be the cause?

The clutch cable adjustment looks vert rusty, the car seems to change gear fine when cold but gradually gets worse.

the rusty bit is fine, a new cable would sort that.

Just done the measure of clutch pedal test and there is roughly 100mm difference between the pedal being to the floor and being released, according to the above link it should be more than this.

Broken rear gearbox mount can cause gear selection problems. Also check the pins in the mechanism on top of gearbox

There's a level plug, next to the driveshaft, but for the life of me I can't remember if it's os or ns!! The box has two sections that store oil, the main and diff areas. You remove the level plug, and pour oil into the breather plug on top of the turret (remove the plug first of course). When the level is correct in the main box it will waterfall down to the diff and when that is full it comes out of the level plug. Unfortunately due to the cascade effect you cannot be sure the level in the main box is correct without putting a little oil into the box, although if oil comes out of the level plug when you remove it then it's probably fine.
Some gearboxes, notably stuff like the F13 in the Astra F are supposed to have the level 10mm or so below the level plug, but I never saw any problems related to overfilling.

lot of messing around all that measuring.......if the pedal is significantly lower than the brake pedal then tighten the cable a bit. Ideally it should sit just below the brake, about the width of the pedal rubber.
