Think you might need to find a better way to describe it fella, it could be anything from that?? Clutch slip, floor mat stuck under throttle pedal, fat bastard in the back etc.

we've driven 150 miles today........
the heater went cold last Thursday........
they check the level when it's serviced don't they?"

See how old the fuel filter is behind the tank on the back. Look from the back of the car, it will be tucked away on a bracket just behind the fuel tank. Chances are it will need replacing, probably blocked.

Other than that, have you tried checking the basics? plugs, leads, distributor pack, take that off have a look inside, rotor arm etc. See where you go from there.

If the problem is intermittent, could possibly be a dodgy sensor, MAF sensor maybe. You may get the EML coming up if it is.

All the things Andrei suggests are valid possibilities. As always, start with the simple stuff, a good service, new filters. If it is random, and pure sluggishness without any jerking then ignition side is unlikely to be at fault but it's never a bad idea to cover the cap, leads and rotor if it's looking old. A bad cts could be messing with the fueling and is common, the MAF can affect fueling too. Depending on age an O2 sensor if it has one is also a possibility. Fuel relays can mess up, reducing voltage to the pump and pumps themselves can suffer with age.
